How important is the role of the military in Hawaii since WWII?
In the 1930’s, the United States government was worried about expanding its empire in the Pacific. They knew that Hawaii was at the target of military forces. Over 2200 Japanese-Americans were residing in Hawaii. In December 1941, a military strike came into action against the US Naval Base in Hawaii Territory (Pearl Harbor), and the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service tried to eliminate the American force against Japan. This attack became the cause of World War II. Right after World War II, it was announced that Martial law would be introduced in Hawaii (Garland & Times, 1973, p. 35). Eventually, the United States military controlled the day-to-day life of every person in Hawaii. They came forward to implement new policies and strategies, set working hours, wages and other things for everyone, with an aim to ease their lives. Any citizen who violated the Martial law would be sent to jail. In one way or the other, the military transformed the culture, landscape, traditions, and values of Hawaii. It took the military years, starting from 1941 to 1946, to overtake all the fields and industries.
The Army, the Marines, and the Navy took steps to turn the precious sugar plantations into housing societies and training centers. They expanded the highways and roads and bombed the small offshore islands. They had to face many problems, especially when some soldiers destroyed the surroundings along with sailors.
