Introduction Insomnia is a sleep disorder that is characterized by difficulties getting adequate sleep without disruptions and this increases the risk of worsening health outcomes. Sleeping well is important and patients with insomnia exhibit certain symptoms like difficulty falling asleep, waking up quite often in the middle of the sleep sessions, waking up too early in the morning and fatigue (National Sleep Foundation, 2018). Insomnia can broadly be categorized into primary insomnia and secondary insomnia. Primary insomnia is associated with the patient that is experiencing the above symptoms due to factors other than health complications of any kind (CBC News, 2016). In secondary insomnia, the patient faces difficulties falling asleep relative to a health condition such as cancer, heartburns, asthma, arthritis, depression among others. In some of the cases it is caused by substances that they take before they went to bed. Such substances could be medication or even alcohol. This paper highlights the causes of insomnia among including the mental health issues, underlying medical conditions, lifestyle choices, environmental factors, and hormonal balances. Mental HealthThere are quite a number of causes of insomnia and the first one is stress. In the case the person affected is under stress, they are likely to experience a hard time falling asleep. This is caused by their state of mind, thereby interfering with the hormonal balance in the body responsible for the relaxation of the muscles and even the mind. Ideally, they are in a state of tension that does not allow their body to find relaxation of any kind (Helbig, Stöckl, Heier, Ladwig & Meisinger, 2015). Some of the major causes of stress could be caused by their work, relationships they have or even health issues. Depression is also connected to the challenges of falling asleep. It is noteworthy, that insomnia can cause changes in hormonal balance and the physiological processes of the body (Fernandez-Mendoza & Vgontzas, 2013). In the cases of depression, insomnia is symptom. Where the patient is experiencing anxiety in any area of their lives, they are also likely to report incidences of experiencing insomnia. This is caused by the level of anxiety which affects the chemical balances in the body, and the mind is not in a position to set the body to relax until a balance is achieved. Medical HealthMedical conditions are also associated with insomnia, where the underlying medical condition interferes with the chemical and hormonal balances in the body that they cause the body to remain tensed. Examples of the most common medical conditions that cause insomnia include; chronic pain, asthma, nasal allergies, low back pain, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis and gastrointestinal complications such as reflux. There are also disorders that are associated with insomnia. For patients that have underlying disorders such as the restless leg disorder syndrome, they are likely to have a challenge falling asleep (Fernandez-Mendoza & Vgontzas, 2013). These are patients that experience such symptoms especially in the latter part of their day, if they are inactive for some time and when they are about to transition between being awake and going to sleep. People that sleep apnea are also candidates to insomnia. Sleep apnea is associated with partial or complete obstruction of their airways during sleep, which means that they experience paused breathing and in some of the cases a drop in the oxygen levels. As such the patient is likely to wake severally during their sleep (Sivertsen et al., 2006).More importantly, other than the fact that medical conditions are likely to interfere with sleep patterns, there is also the fact that medication one could be taken for their condition or disease may affect their sleep patterns(Fernandez-Mendoza & Vgontzas, 2013).LifestyleThe lifestyle of a patient is also known to cause insomnia.
