This assignment will be completed in three parts. Refer to the information below as a guide to the information that should be included in each part.

Follow the guidelines for the quantitative and qualitative article critiques in Chapter 5, Box 5.2: Guide to an Overall Critique of a Quantitative Research Report and Box 5.3: Guide to an Overall Critique of a Qualitative Research Report of the textbook or the Research Critique Additional Template Resource.

1) Utilize a central heading to indicate that what follows is the critique of the articles.

2) The side headings of the critique for each article should follow the headings in Box 5.2 and 5.3.

3) Note that within these BASIC guidelines, there are additional references to Detailed Critiquing Guidelines found in various boxes in chapters focused on the various elements of a research study report. Use these to expand the research study and to learn specific terminology appropriate to the critique of research.

Abstract
Qualitative: While it is indeed true that the residents of nursing homes are usually referred to other hospitals for the purposes of diagnostics, the article and its authors seem to have used a lot of assumption by noting that in situ medical care is more beneficial and helpful for complex procedures. This generalization can easily skew the entire course of the research.
Quantitative: It is evident that pneumonia is a life-threatening predicament in nursing homes residents with dementia. Doctors and families of the patients face critical choice weather to withhold antibiotics when patients living days are numbered or treatment is likely to be costly.
Introduction
Pneumonia being a life-threatening disease, in most nursing homes residents with dementia. It leaves both physicians and family members in a dilemma weather to withhold antibiotics from patients when it comes to their realization that the patients living days are numbered in a health care set up. This creates a suspicion among those parties involved.
Qualitative: The article clearly builds up on the assumption that it can obtain the best results and find out a solution to the care of pneumonia, through the interviewing of the patient’s family members on their perspectives. This is a good step to take, however, it is rather inconclusive, to just focus on it as the central point of the study. This is because, medical processes might sometimes be quite different from the general views of the people around. The fact that the people around are against something, isn’t necessarily reason enough for the thing to be wrong, especially in medical perspectives. A supporting question would have been better in ensuring a more conclusive qualitative research.
Quantitative: It is good for the researchers to take note of the fact that there is indeed a dilemma for both the physicians and the family members, when it comes to making decisions concerning antibiotic dissemination to their patients. What the researchers fail to illustrate however, is how such a decision is complex. It looks more like a basic dilemma, than a complex decision making process as indicated. The introductory statement of pneumonia frequently occurring in nursing home patients is a general statement that can be misunderstood by anyone reading the paper. Decision-making concerning weather the patients to be administered with antibiotics for both the physicians and the family members was challenging to both parties hence leaving the patients in a confused situation which they could not understand well.
Hypotheses or research questions
Quantitative: Is dissemination of antibiotics to patients suffering from pneumonia important?
What are the importance of antibiotics to patients suffering from pneumonia in nursing homes?
Qualitative: The objective of this study was to learn if LTCF care for pneumonia is consistent with resident and family preferences using a qualitative descriptive study design.
Part 2
Quantitative and Qualitative
Methods
Qualitative: The inclusion-exclusion procedure was an excellent move, but this faces difficulties especially if the targeted group is not ready to participate in the research. The process used in this study, also, addressed other emerging issues in pneumonia patients but these could easily make the interviewer deviate too much from the main interview hence collecting incomplete data. The time for the interview was too long that it requires the participant to prepare adequately. During this preparation, the participants could by bad lack exaggerate or hide a lot of information. This can result in inaccurate data hence wrong results. Finally, the researcher did not explain his decision for the chosen method of data collection.
Quantitative: While the use of an observational cohort study for three months is impressive, the research somehow oversteps the ethical requirements, by seemingly anticipating patient deaths as part of its process. The sample size used was sufficient for quantitative research; the size minimizes errors due to small samples sizes. Additionally, the paper did not discuss any ethical considerations such as autonomy.
