Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection in Critically In Patient in Intensive Care Unit
Introduction
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common infection acquired by hospitalized adult patients which may even account at 30%-40% of all nosocomial infections. This has been seen happening in hospitals whereby in the intensive care unit (ICU) 8%-21% of the patients are allied of nosocomial infections. Research has shown that 95% of the ICU cases are associated with the presence of an indwelling urinary Catheter (Rello, 2007). This paper seek to look at catheter associated urinary tract infection in critically ill patient in intensive care unit and the multiple medications for treatment on catheter associated infections.
Although catheter associated urinary tract infection (UTI) is a very common infections, its link with mortality remains contentious. On the other hand, intensive Care Units (ICUs) see a significant number of in-hospital infections, with a high commonness of multiresistant microorganisms. Urinary Tract Infection (UTIs) is among the most common ICU infection seen in the globe. It is also the most common and most associated with frequent bladder catheter use in critically ill patients. Though several studies have investigated the related risk factor, the result of such infection upon the patient`s morbidity-mortality, the hospital costs and the measure which are kept aside to prevent such infections, lack of consistent protocols in large proportion of ICU and having little knowledge among hospital personnel`s has been the challenge (Rello, & Kollef, 2001).
Current research reviews the evidence on colonization of the urinary track in the ICU which includes asymptomatic bacteruria and UTI. It has been proved that most of the provided literature makes no peculiarity between the two conditions which possibly reflect the existence of a continuum representing the presence of microorganisms in the urinary track with or without patient symptoms.
Catheter associated urinary tract infection
For one to be in position to evaluate the potential factors which are associated to colonization of
Urinary track in ICU, there are three vital physiopathological mechanisms that are involved. The Infections are believed to develop in three dissimilar ways which include:
Colonization through the center lumen
This usually happens when the catheter is removed from the collector bag a situation which is not proffered and should not happen.
Colonization of urinary meatus by gastrointestinal track bacteria
The bacteria are believed to ascend along the external catheter wall which mostly represents 66% of all the cases of the UTI infections.
Colonization from remote location
This usually occurs through bloodstream infections produced by staphylococcus aureus and candidemias
According to the recent studies, there ha...
