Canada Healthcare System
Canada is among those countries that are highly advanced and industrialized. Canada is known to have a health care system that portrays the values of equity and fairness. As depicted in their health care system, resources and responsibilities are being shared, which also serves as a foundation in their significant reforms. This country's health care system is highly dynamic as reforms are constantly being made to accommodate the changes taking place within medicine and society as a whole. However, the main features of the health system stay the same – universal health coverage is given to its citizens, including all necessary medical services provided based on need instead of an individual’s capacity to pay (Allin & Rudoler, 2015).
Financing
Canada is known for its national health insurance program (NHI). Canada’s NHI is a health insurance system regulated and controlled by the government that covers Canadian citizens. This health insurance is provided universally with its well-defined medical benefits. This is supported financially by the government at federal, provincial, and state levels. These finances predominantly come from general revenue taxes (Marchildon, Allin, Merkur, & WHO, 2020). The management of finances, regulation, and administration of the universal health coverage of the resident falls under the jurisdiction of provincial and territorial governments (PTs). Partial coverage for non-medicare services is also provided to some populations that include other health services and goods such as long-term care and prescription medicines (Marchildon, Allin, Merkur, & WHO, 2020).
The federal government's role focuses mainly on providing support to the financial needs of PTs governments and administration and setting national standards for the Canada Health Act. Moreover, coverage for health insurance for subpopulations is also delivered by the federal government. This includes Inuit, First Nations people, military personnel serving under Canadian Armed Forces, eligible veterans, some refugee claimants, and prison inmates. Furthermore, they fund and facilitate research and data gathering regarding innovations in medicine, including medical devices (Marchildon, Allin, Merkur, & WHO, 2020).
Health Services Delivery system
Currently, Canada's health care delivery system is rooted in its provision during the year 1984 of the Canada Health Act. All necessary medical services at the provincial level should be covered and provided by the provincial health plan. The majority of the ph...
