Part 1
My State Representative is Christina Morales. Morales’ grandparents migrated to Houston in 1931. In 1997, the person established the Annual Morales Back to School Supplies Giveaway as a community outreach program. In 2019, Morales became the State Representative of Harris County residents in House District 145 (Texas House of Representatives, 2021). The State Representative is dedicated to improving the accessibility of quality healthcare services and public education. Morales is the vice-chairperson of the International Relations and Economic Development Committee. Additionally, she is a member of the Culture, Tourism, and Recreation and Local and Consent Calendars committees. Some of the roles that Morales holds as the State Representative are to ensure that many Texans can access quality medical care, make sure that all residents can vote freely and fairly, and expand public education to meet the needs of individuals. Consequently, Morales has made significant strides in ensuring that residents of her county can afford life necessities.
My State Senator is Carol Alvarado. She is a small business owner and studied for her bachelor's and master's at the University of Houston. She is a democrat and was first elected in a special election in 2018 (The Texas Senate, 2021). In 2008, she represented District 145 in the Texas House of Representatives for five terms. Alvarado also served as the co-chairperson of the Select Committee on Transparency and the chairperson of the Urban Affairs Committee (The Texas Senate, 2021). Senator Alvarado's primary roles have always been on public education, health, and economic development. For instance, she strengthened the policies regulating the abuse of e-cigarettes among young people. Moreover, Senator Alvarado advocates female reproductive rights and passed a law to help the victims of sexual harassment and abuse. Between 2002 and 2008, Alvarado was a Houston City Council member and facilitated policies to prohibit smoking in restaurants, monitor air quality, and stop the shipping of hazardous chemicals in Houston and its neighborhoods. As a result, Senator Alvarado has made significant contributions to the well-being of the residents of Houston.
