The basic needs for human survival have been re-evaluated from time to time to include other elements such as sex. Currently, energy is included among the primary elements that are necessary to ensure the survival of human beings on Earth. Energy development has entered a new historical era where clean and low-carbon energy is in demand. The unconventional oil and gas revolutions in U.S.A has enabled it to live its dream of “energy independence” for the last four decades. In 2008, the American government unveiled a great energy strategy of “remaking America with green energy.” The unconventional revolutions of oil and gas in the U.S.A is changing the global oil, gas and new energy pattern, which has affected the economic and political development across the world. Since the adoption of the “remaking America with green energy” in 2008, various strategies and policies have been proposed to reduce the reliance of coil and oil energy in the country as an attempt to conserve the environment. In regard to this, this paper involves an inter-branch perspective analysis of policies surrounding the emergence of new energy that will reduce the usage of coal and oil.
As at 2010, the United States ranked second in the global consumption of energy. Majority of this energy comes from petroleum (25%) and coal (22%), both of which are non-renewable sources. Oil is increasingly used because of its abundance in some states such as Texas, associated low costs and its utility in internal combustion engines. On the other hand, coal is mainly used because it is safer, easier to use and a relatively cheap source of energy. However, these energy sources cannot be replenished over a short period of time, and risk being depleted. On the other hand, the nation experiences increased energy consumption at a rate higher than its local production. Although a part of this difference has been met through imports, the imports have not been sufficient enough to bridge the gap. Furthermore, there is need for cleaner energy sources to replace the existing ones. In this regard, policies which favor the emergence and ultimate adoption of new energy would be deemed appropriate. Given the importance of this issue, it has been addressed by the local, federal and the state governments accordingly.
Issue
Non-renewable energy sources such as coal and oil are likely to be depleted in the near future. This would adversely affect the future generation since they cannot be replenished easily. Given the increased consumption of energy, there is a need for energy sources which can keep up with demand without being depleted. In addition, these main sources of energy are among the main environment pollutants currently.
Objectives
There is need to protect the existing non-renewable sources of energy such as coal and oil. Moreover, there has been increasing need to protect the ecological environment. This can be achieved by appropriately utilizing the advancements in technology to fully exploit the renewable sources of energy.
Energy Transformations
Energy has experienced two transformations, from wood to coal, which gave rise to oil and gas. Due to the advancements in the technological sector, this era marks the transformation of the third transformation from oil and gas to new energy. During earlier times, primitive humans relied on fire for energy thus making it an essential element in the survival of human beings. Due to technological advancements, the use of coal begun in the mid-1700s with the first coal power plant in the world coming into operation in 1875 (Zou, Zhao, Zhang, & Xiong, 2016). The development of coal was accelerated during the industrial period due to human civilization becoming the primary source of energy. Industries became reliant on coal energy making it the first transformation, from wood to coal. The invention of a combustion engine in 1886 by Daimler ignited a great demand for oil and gas. With advancements in technology, geological theory and drilling drove the production of oil and gas to higher levels making it the primary source of energy by 1965. Oil and gas replaced coal recording the second transformation (coal to oil and gas).
Due to the increased social and economic demand for new and low-carbon energy in the society, a third transformation has become inevitable. For the past few decades, the ecological and environmental issues which resulted from the use of high-carbon energy resources such as coal and oil has become prominent. This intensive use of high-carbon energy resources is reason for fog and haze in countries such as UK and China. Due to the increased demand for a safe environment, new energy which has been considered to be clean energy resources are expected to become the primary resources of energy across the world.
Although coal, oil and gas will each account for energy consumption across the world, new energy will play a critical role in the long run. Despite the debate on which resource should be used, the demand for institutional and domestic energy is increasing everyday not only in America but also other countries across the world. Currently, America relies on coal, oil and gas energy, thus no perfect form of energy in the country. Coal, oil and gas are plenty and readily available in the country but they are not environmental friendly. Clean energy sources such as wind and solar are not steady thus not promising whereas geothermal is economical when it is operational despite its extraction complexities. This is the major reason why technologies evolve to solve the existing problems with favoring any short fall. On the other hand, renewable energy industries develop good relationships with each other to ensure that the new energy forms are created. However, various scholars have asserted in their studies that renewable energy is expensive than the other sources. This has resulted in the emergence of cost driven policies and decisions. Scholars such as Socolow have advised that, “to meet future energy demand, there is a need for the United States to establish effective renewable resource policy.”
New Energy
There are various forms of energy which have been invented and are believed to me clean thus satisfying the demand for low-carbon energy. Renewable energy source are the types of new energy that is being advocated for in most states in the United States.
Types of Renewable Sources of Energy
A variety of renewable energy resources exist and they include; solar energy, ocean energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, hydropower, bio-fuels and wave energy (Twidell, & Weir, 2015). Most of these resources originate from the sun either directly or indirectly. Therefore, they are continuously being renewed and they will never be depleted.
Solar Energy
This source of energy comes from the sun either directly or indirectly. It can be used for both domestic and industrial purposes. It is being used to light and heat homes and other buildings, and hot-water heating. For this type of energy to be used, it requires technological advancement equipment such as solar panels and batteries.
Ocean Energy
Ocean energy is formed from various sources. First, ocean tide energy is formed as a result of gravitational pull of the sun and moon on earth. Second, tidal energy is as a result of wind and tides. Additionally, the ocean surfaces are warmed faster by the sun than the depths does resulting in temperature difference which can be utilized as an energy source.
Geothermal Energy
This type of energy source is harnessed from the internal heat of the earth. It has a variety of uses such as production of electricity as well as heating and cooling of houses. It is also used to charge electric vehicles. The need for quality and efficient batteries has sparked a new search for energy.
Wind Energy
Wind occurs as a result of heat from the sun and its energy is produced by the wind turbines.
Bio-fuels
Sunlight helps plants to grow and develop together with rain and air. When the plants they produce biomass which is used to produce bio-energy such as biogas. Biogas is used for cooking as well as lighting in homes.
Hydropower
This is mostly generated from water.
New Energy Policy
The development of renewable energy resources has been progressing in the United States since 2000. This progress has been witnessed in state-level where 26 states have implemented mandatory renewable portfolio standards (RPS) whereas other six states have initiated non-binding renewable energy objectives (Yi, & Feiock, 2012). The renewable portfolio standards are aimed at creating more than 60 giga watts by the 2025. This is likely to account for 15% of the anticipated increase demand for energy by that year. The gains from these standards are impressive and are aligned to clean energy creation, environmental and climate protection. These standards have been adopted by a majority of the EU countries and they are spreading across the world.
The renewable-energy inventions are of importance to the world at large because of their benefits. First, they are clean and have reduced climatic and environmental impact than earlier energy-technologies. Secondly, they are renewable thus they will never be depleted. Lastly, renewable energy-technologies developed in the country are exported to other countries affecting its trade deficit. The United States’ policy makers are on the race of establishing better alternatives that will encourage the development of new energy as a way of meeting the ever increasing economic and environmental demand for low-carbon energy sources.
