Executive Summary
Community policing has transformed the way police used to cooperate with the communities in ensuring that the neighbourhoods are safe and secure. Hence, the effect of community policing (CP) strategies on the levels of trust and crime reduction in the communities is explored in this paper. The focus of this research paper is to understand the impact of community policing on the cooperation between police officers and communities. In the past, policing was concerned with reactive enforcement, which, in most cases, made residents feel disassociated from the police. However, community policing has now become an active model that is based on fairness and collaboration. This research has three important studies as its basis, which discuss that cooperation and compliance from the people are motivated by police legitimacy. A meta-analysis is also addressed, which highlights the ability of CP to decrease crimes significantly. The impact of procedural justice (PJ) training of the officers is also addressed in this research paper. This paper clarifies what community policing is, its origins, and why it is important in the current world. It also examines the influence of history, along with the modern challenges, on our perception of trust and crime reduction in cities. Community policing is not a short-term solution and provides its benefits over the long term through its steady work by making neighbourhoods safer and more trusting
Overview of Community Policing
Community policing (CP) is a recent policing philosophy that is based on the assumption that close collaborations between the police and the community are key to the construction of safer communities. Community policing (CP) focuses on the prevention of crime and development of trust through openness and cooperation, which, in contrast to the traditional enforcement method, is considered better. The traditional method is mainly concerned with responding to crime that has already happened (Ekici et al., 2022). The need for community policing is also important due to the fact that cities are densely populated and diverse in terms of social life, which is why safety issues are rather complicated. This research paper will therefore address the issue of the effectiveness of CP strategies on the reduction of crime and building trust with the population in an urban setting. It uses the research of Tyler and Fagan (2008) on legitimacy and cooperation, a meta-analysis of the impact of CP on crime by Ekici et al. (2022), and an experiment of procedural justice training by Weisburd et al. (2022). This research paper will explain that CP has the potential to revolutionize the way police and communities interact with each other and prevent crime.
Community Policing (CP) has marked a shift from a reactive, enforcement-driven approach to one focused on problem-solving and building mutual trust to prevent crime from happening. Weisburd et al. (2022) have highlighted that the foundation of community policing rests on three core elements, which are considered to be partnerships, organizational transformation, and problem solving. Partnership highlights the importance of collaboration, organizational transformation deals with adapting the police culture and structure to support community engagement, and Problem-solving addresses root causes of crime through proactive strategies.
