According to Tribune Content Agency LLC (2012), University of Kansas was the earliest higher learning establishment to enroll both female and male students. The foremost class to graduate from this university was in 1873, and it did so with just four students. The athletic curriculums were built up later; football program was developed in 1892, and basketball curriculum was developed in 1898. A number of universities have superior coaches who have been victorious and developed the game; however, a small number of schools can pride themselves about having coaches who came up with the game. Naismith James came to the University of Kansas soon after creating the basketball sport. Although he was not initially appointed as the school’s coach, Naismith became the first and trained students from 1898 and 1907. Naismith is the only basketball coach in the University of Kansas’s history to end his profession with a losing record of 55 to 60.

Distinguished alumni include Kroger CEO Dillon David, Dee Wallace the actress, the Apollo 14pilot, Joe Engle, Rob Riggle, cast member for ’Saturday night live’, and Steve Doocy, a Fox News television star. Along with the conventional commencement exercises, University of Kansas graduates have their tradition that began in 1907. About 4,000 students walk from Mount Oread into the school’s Memorial Stadium in a work-out known as ‘walking down the hill’(Thompson,2011).
KU Mascot
Mascots are thought to bring good luck particularly to sporting teams. Nearly every university claims a mascot. According to KU Website, Kansas University owns a Jayhawk, a legendary bird with a captivating history. Its foundation is rooted in the famous struggles experienced by Kansas settlers. The word ‘Jayhawk’ was possibly created about 1848. Stories of its use emerged from Illinois to Texas. The word comprises of the Blue Jay, a loud, irritable thing that robs other birds, and the sparrow, a quiet hunter. During the University of Kansas’s first forty-plus years, the university did not have a recognized mascot. All through at least one early term of the university’s football, the players used a pig as their mascot.
For some time, a bulldog came out as a mascot at athletic events. However, students continued to regard themselves Jayhawks and to draw their versions of the legendary bird. At the start of 20th century, as the university started embracing the Jayhawks though informally, a symbol of the University of Kansas, a costumed edition of the bird materialized on the sidelines of sporting events. Presently, two kinds of the Jayhawks applaud the university teams to success: Baby Jay and Big Jay. Big Jay was cheering solo till 1971 when Baby Jay emerged at halftime of the university’s homecoming game.
