History is a vast mosaic of stories. Some pieces stand out, but all the pieces are important in producing the whole effect.
You will select a topic and write a brief essay describing and explaining something or someone that illustrates or represents one of the world cultural systems covered in the class. This can include discussion of sacred texts (the Bhagavad Gita), national sagas (El Cid or the Mahabharata) or political leaders (Augustus Caesar or Qin Shi-huang-ti) or some other kind of object (the Islamic minaret or the Olmec calendar), a stupa of the Indian emperor Ashoka, or an institution (the Shogunate of Japan), or place (Great Zimbabwe or the Great Pyramid of Giza). These are just some suggestions of topics, but you are free to follow your own interests in selecting one. I am happy to discuss the options and help narrow things down. Your paper should be both descriptive and analytical – that is, you should be answering a question or explaining an event or development. A good research paper always has a clear thesis statement and then presents the information that makes the case. We will spend some time in class talking about the writing process.
The paper should be three to four pages in length. It should be typed, double spaced, with standard one-inch margins all around. There is no need for a title page—just put your name and date in the top right corner of the first page.
If you quote material from the book (or any other source for that matter) you will need to supply a footnote. To do so is no reflection on your creativity as a writer. It is good academic manners to acknowledge both the direct sources of quotations as well as the less direct, less visible sources that inform one’s thinking about a subject. But it is more than just good manners; failure to properly cite one’s sources opens one to suspicions of plagiarism, a serious academic offense and one which would compel your instructor to fail you. At the least, an undocumented paper will be penalized in the grading. I will be happy to answer any questions about correct footnote citations.
Grading Rubric:
A: main ideas well represented with solid detail as evidence. A grade in the "A " range will be given to efforts that exhibit the basic ideas or information asked for plus demonstrate a recognition of any exceptions plus an understanding of the details. They must also be well organized and well written: the thesis and the evidence clearly presented and documented.
B: main ideas asked for covered, but with less detail in evidence or detail simply recited. Essay still must be well organized and well-written in order to receive a "B".
C: main ideas asked for shown, but with less substantial detail in evidence. Fair organization of material and fair writing will get a grade of "C.".
D: main ideas missing or vaguely stated. Lack of evidence, poor organization and writing will result in a grade of "D."
F: main ideas missing, lack of detail, poor writing and organization. Also, any paper lacking proper citations of sources – suggesting plagiarism – may receive a grade of F.

The Ancient Greek Triremes
The ancient trireme was a ship that was constructed a long time ago in Greece. This ship was significant and made the Greek people feel powerful because they were able to dominate and control the sea and win battles. The ship was a warship, and it was so strong that it helped the Greek city control the seas. The Greek people used wood and some metal to make the ship. These materials were used to make the ship stronger. The name trireme originated from its structure. It had three separate rows of oars that were held on every side. Every row was referred to as the bank of oar. This ship was faster than the others because of the three banks in those ancient days. In every row, some rowers could help move the ship. The ship was very huge and heavy. It needed about 170 experienced rowers to start it. These experts were well-built men who would cooperate and power the ship to its highest speed. The rows were staggered. Placing the three rows in a staggered way made the operation of the ship easy. The bottom bank, situated at the lowest level, had the longest and strongest oar compared to the other three banks. The oars in the middle were also a bit long but not longer than the bottom level. It was just a bit shorter, and finally, the top bank, which had the most excellent level, was the shortest of all oars.[York, J. (2020). The ship was large and lengthy, so all 170 rowers could fit comfortably in it. The hull of this ship was longer than that of vessels made in those days. Most of the trireme warships could incredibly stretch about 120 feet in length. It could point from the prow to the rear stern. However, the ships were made very thin and were less on the water's surface to enhance an easy way of passing through the waves. This ship had a sharp-edged front and a strengthened prow made of massive bronze metal that behaved as a spearhead. The Greek sailors could tamper with the bronze prow in their enemies' boats. They could drill a hole so that the ship sinks during the seasons of war. The captains were positioned above the deck of the ship. Their work was to control the sails, ropes, and the steering of the ship, guiding it in the direction it should take. At the front deck stayed soldiers who were armed and ready to attack when faced by the enemies. A group of Archers at the front had bows and arrows and were prepared to shoot off the enemies with missile fire if necessary.
Just beneath the above deck area was a lower space with the triple different levers and wooden items, e.g., chairs and benches, built directly into the ship structure. The massive oars were visible on small graced holes outside the hull planks. The trained rowers had to coordinate their rowing sticks in the best way to haste and move towards the direction they liked in times of attack.
