According to Nieswiadomy and Bailey (2018) questionnaires are likely to be the most frequently used method of data collection in published nursing studies. Questionnaires are self-report instruments which come in many different formats and delivery options. Most questionnaires are looking for a particular subject’s beliefs or thoughts about a certain topic. One advantage of questionnaires is how easily they can gather different kinds of information. They can be used to measure knowledge levels, opinions, attitudes, beliefs, ideas, feelings, and perceptions, essentially any information about the subjects that are responding. They have many advantages as they are quick to use and generally inexpensive. It is less time consuming to administer a questionnaire than many other methods such as interview conduction or observational research. The subjects who respond to questionnaires can remain anonymous, which increases the likelihood that responses are honest. Additionally, questionnaires can be administered in large and widespread geographical areas. A last advantage of questionnaires is it is easier to test for reliability and validity with them than many other research instruments.

One disadvantage of questionnaires is that the validity of the data that is gathered through this method is completely reliant on the subject’s willingness to provide accurate and truthful information. The respondents may provide answers that they believe to be socially acceptable, or they may fail to answer some of the items on the questionnaire. Respondents must also be literate and if items on the questionnaire are misunderstood, the researcher is not able to clarify them. Additionally, those completing the questionnaire cannot have any physically disability which would affect their ability to answer the questionnaire. Other disadvantages include the cost of mailing questionnaires as well as considering that mail sometimes remains undelivered. Lastly, the responses that are gathered from the questionnaire may not represent the population or the rate of responses could be low, which would skew the data.

I believe that questionnaires are not only easy to administer, but they are easy to answer as the participant and do not take up too much time or effort. As I have been completing my research on breastfeeding, I have seen many articles who have utilized questionnaires to gather various kinds of data. They would be used to gather demographic data, knowledge about breastfeeding, hospital teaching regarding breastfeeding, and breastfeeding practices. These questionnaires gathered majority the data for many different articles. An example of one of these articles from the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing titled “Relationships Among Factors Related to Childbirth and Breastfeeding Outcomes in Primiparous Women” used three questionnaires in their study with the aim of examining the relationship among modifiable factors related to childbirth and effective breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity (Bryanton et al., 2020). According to Bryanton et al., these questionnaires took only 20 minutes to complete and could be done at the participants convenience. These questionnaires examined perception of birth experience for both women who had vaginal deliveries as well as those who had cesarean. Another questionnaire was used to examine the perception of the helpfulness of childbirth support. One questionnaire also gathered demographic data. This displays the variety and convenience of questionnaires.
