The epidermis is a thin, outer skin layer that can be seen by the eye and protects the body. The epidermis does not have any blood vessels, and depends on the dermis, the layer underneath the skin that disposes wastes and provides nutrients to the body (Yun et al, 2021).
The epidermis is composed of stratified squamous epithelium that is keratinized. The epidermis is made of five layers of epithelial cells, depending on where it is located in the body. The stratified squamous epithelium which is the major skin composition is impermeable, tough and self-replacing. The epidermis does not have any blood vessels within its avascular.
