Research Paper and Summary Table of Wound Analysis
I am including a template and also the PICOT question for this project, I will also include a sample for comparison. Please note the attachments. You have done this for me in the past but this project will end up being 3 parts. This part 1 of three parts.
1. P: Patient, population, or problem: Post-surgical patients
2. I: Intervention: Applying occlusive dressings
3. C: Comparison (alternative to the intervention): Leaving the wound open to air
4. O: Outcome (What structure, process, result, or perception need is the goal?) Affect surgical site infections?
Requirements
Through this assignment, the student will
1. Conduct a systematic search of relevant databases to find research-based evidence related to a nursing problem
2. Construct a summary table of four peer-reviewed quantitative single original studies, indicating the purpose, sample, design/level of evidence, findings, and limitations of each
3. Summarize the findings of the four studies as a whole
Preparing the Table
Conduct a PICO(T) search on the nursing problem related to your practice setting. Select the four most recent peer-reviewed studies that describe original research in a single study (do not select a meta-analysis, systematic review of research, or integrative literature review). Refer to the Types of Articles Found in the Nursing and Healthcare document in the Course Resource section to make sure that you are using the correct document.
Construct a table summarizing the four most credible and recent studies, using the Research Summary template on the next page (also found in Course Resource Section). Analyze each article and provide the following information in brief format: purpose of the study; type of sample and number of participants; design of the study, along with the level of evidence; findings of the study; and limitations of the study.
Preparing the Summary
Briefly (4-6 pages; not including cover page and reference page(s)) summarize the results of the four studies as a whole. Follow this outline:
I. In a short paragraph, restate your research question and describe your search strategy. (10 points)
II. Analysis of the designs used in the studies presented in your research summary table. (10 points)
III. Where do these studies fall on the Levels of Evidence table? What is the significance of this information? (10 points)
IV. Based on these studies, what are the findings? What is the answer to the research question? How well do the studies answer or fail to answer the question? Provide rationale to support your answer. (10 points)
V. How was each sample selected and how many participants in the studies. Is this number adequate? Why or why not? (10 points)
VI. Overall, what are the limitations of the study, and how can these limitations be overcome in subsequent studies? (10 points)
VII. Based on these findings, is the evidence that you found on your topic strong enough to suggest a change in practice or an idea for practice? Why or why not? Please provide a rationale for your answer. (10 points)
I have included the PICOT question and articles, template and sample paper for your review. Please note the articles I want you to use, they are also included along with the PICOT question.
RESEARCH SUMMARY TABLE OF WOUND ANALYSIS
By
Institution
Author (year)
Purpose
Sample/Number of Participants (provide descriptive statistics)
Design
Level of Evidence
Findings (provide any inferential statistics)
Limitations
Buchweitz et al. 2016
Evaluation of cosmetic outcome for laparoscopic procedure after 3 months
A limited sample of 77 patients studied, with 56 giving complete data
Comparison/ descriptive study between skin adhesive and transcutaneous suture
Evidence from a comparative/ descriptive study
No significant difference in Vas scale means and median between SA and TS
Monocentric: Requires polycentric study to evaluate relevance of outcome
Choi et al. 2016
Assessing responsiveness of PUSH in assessing the healing progress of wounds
Convenient sample of patients with acute of chronic wounds (N=541 for four months). No comparison group
A single descriptive study of effectiveness in internal and external responsiveness of PUSH tool in tracking healing progress of acute and chronic wounds
Evidence from a single descriptive study
PUSH score was high in subjects with wounds healed but not improved. Patients with wounds static had very small PUSH scores.
Potential bias in using one assessor in several activities. No evidence on stability of PUSH instrument over time
Gillespie et al. 2014
To examine post-surgery wound assessment and compare with evidence based guidelines for prevention of surgical site infection.
Convenience random samples of 200 post-surgery medical records in Queensland Australia
A retrospective clinical chart audit: a single descriptive study
Evidence from a single descriptive study
152 records met eligibility criteria. 87/152 were clean, 63/152 documented assessment. 7/15 of patients with postoperative complications developed infections.
No comparison group present. Lacking proof of linkage between practice and evidence
Grover et al. 2015
Comparison of open wound treatment and occlusive dressing in respect to surgical site infection
A convenience sample of 100 patients, with 50 patients for each random trial
Comparison/ descriptive study between open wound treatment and occlusive dressing
Evidence from comparison/descriptive study
Patients with occlusive dressing had 8% infection rate while patients with open wound treatment had 6% infection rate
Potentially a monocentric study: Requires polycentric study to evaluate evidence due to small sample population
Summary
The research question employed in the research summary table was, “How effective are wound management methods in improving outcome”. The evaluation utilized four peer-reviewed journals from original research studies to find the effectiveness of some clinical approaches used in wound management and their effectiveness in reducing infections, improving healing and assessing healing process among others. This study utilized research studies that were original in nature and provided the efficacy of wound management methods in a clinical setting.
In this analysis, two articles had the results of researches that compared one wound management method to another, with the view of deducing the suitability of one and the outcomes in terms of reducing surgical site infection or healing process. The study by Buchweitz et al. (2016) examined the clinical significance of using skin adhesive against transcutaneous suture in patients undergoing laparoscopic procedure through comparison of the outcomes of the two methods. Grover et al. (2015) compared the outcome of occlusive dressing and open wound treatment. The studies by Choi et al. 2016 and Gillespie et al. (2014) were single descriptive studies and both had no control groups.
