Research Problems and Design
The spirit of inquiry is synonymous with research. In our day-to-day life, be it at work, in school or our personal life, we encounter countless events that we question why does it have to be this way? Or, why is this occurring? If it genuinely interests us, these questions we ask ourselves become the first step in the evolution of the research process. We identify a problem, formulate a PICO (T) question to research the issue, and then a research design is selected to outline how to conduct the study to answer the question (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2019). The researcher has multiple options to choose for a research design. One must determine if they are trying to understand a phenomenon, measure or test something, or do both (Houser, 2014). Sometimes the study is made up of at least three to four different designs. For example, one could utilize a quantitative retrospective nonexperimental descriptive design. What design would be ideal for the problem you identified in the Unit 2 discussion question? Explain your answer.

The problem identified in the week two discussion was determining what sources of evidence the healthcare providers use to address higher incidences of falls in hospitalized patients. One would execute such a study using a qualitative cross-sectional study because it describes the characteristics or status of the situation at a particular point in time, as highlighted by Hauser (2016). Moreover, one would best answer this question using level IV of evidence.
The qualitative design is appropriate for answering this question because of its capacity to assist researchers in understanding a phenomenon. In this case, the focus of the research question is to reveal the sources of evidence, which only requires describing the situation using appropriate evidence (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2019).
