INTRODUCTION. An introduction is needed with a clear statement of why you are writing this essay and how the essay will be developed. Include the title of the article you will be discussing.
Remember, this is NOT a paper about the subject matter of the chosen article. Rather this is a demonstration of your ability to read, review and critique the article as research. You are expected to support your comments using the additional research article.
BODY. The bulk of your essay should include the following.
a) Identify the purpose of the study; what is the research question?
b) Identify the research approach (method/design) that was used?
c) Define the method and explain some of the benefits of using this method. Identify why you think it was chosen for this particular study.
d) Explain how the review of additional research articles relate to the study and support your comments?
e) Explain the impact this study, as well as reading research in general, will have on your future practice and on nursing practice as a whole?
CONCLUSION. Your conclusion should summarize the purpose of your paper and clearly address how you demonstrated your ability to read a research study.
REFERENCE LIST. All in-text citations will be in the reference list. Your reference list will include the additional research article you have mentioned in your essay to support your statements. If you did not refer to an article in your essay, it should not be in your reference list.

The qualitative research paper I opted to review was completed by Bressler et al., 2017. The article focused on understanding moral distress within cultural complexities. This study aimed to investigate nurses' experiences working in a chronic ventilator-dependent ward with a high proportion of elderly Orthodox Jewish patients nearing the end of their lives. Little is known about how cultural variations affect nurses' and families' expectations for end-of-life patient care. Focus groups were used in a qualitative study of 27 nurses. Following early interviews, the initial topic was expanded to include investigating nurses' moral suffering. Themes were discovered through content analysis in three categories, one of which is featured in this article (Bressler et al., 2017). This essay will discuss why qualitative research was the best strategy for this study and compare it to another recent study.
Qualitative research collects, interprets, and analyzes non-numerical data. Qualitative research can assist us better in understanding how individuals perceive and interpret their social settings. Qualitative data include non-numerical data such as video, text, audio recordings, or photographs. In-depth interviews or diary entries can be used to collect information, which can then be analyzed using theme analysis or grounded theory (Squires & Dorsen, 2018). Qualitative researchers analyze phenomena in their natural and original settings to make sense of or interpret events in terms of the meanings individuals attach to them.
The goal of qualitative study is to understand the social realities of cultures, groups, and individuals as closely as possible to how participants view or experience them. Organizations and people are therefore studied in their natural setting. A qualitative research approach is exploratory and seeks to help understand 'why' or even 'how' a particular behavior or phenomenon behaves in a given setting. It may be used to generate evidence-based theories and hypotheses. Limitless creativity and interpretation are possible with qualitative research. The researcher does not just depart the field with mountains of empirical data on which to base their findings (Squires & Dorsen, 2018). Qualitative interpretations are generated, and several methodologies, such as content analysis, discourse analysis, theme analysis, and grounded theory, can be used. For example, thematic analysis is a qualitative tool for uncovering latent or explicit themes within data. After the data has been coded, themes typically emerge.
Before conducting their study, Bressler, Hanna, and Smith obtained clearance from the institutional review board. Nurses' demographic data included tenure on the unit, age, certification status, and the highest level of nursing education. Even though no religious affiliation was detected, the following question was posed: "Do you possess any spiritual or religious ideas that influence or challenge your nursing practice?" Finally, the authors of the article read and reread all of the transcripts severally and extensively discussed them. Thematic and category agreement was discovered using content analysis. The key discovery was a disparity in views known as depth-of-field dissimilarity, in which the focus and depth of perspective differ depending on who is looking.
According to the findings of this study, depth-of-field dissimilarity might be utilized to design educational techniques, clinical therapies, and research to address moral distress and cultural complexity. Concerns about medical futility have developed as technology has increased the availability of life-prolonging drugs. According to the study, nurses endure moral anguish when they see ineffective treatment. Nurses who provide end-of-life care must be supported since seeming futility can cause moral, ethical, and emotional difficulties (Bressler et al., 2017).
Quantitative research is another option for researchers. Data assist us in translating quantitative data into relevant synthesized information to enhance decision-making. Data may be summarized to describe correlations, trends, and linkages. Statistical data can be descriptive or inferential. Inferential statistics are used to identify statistically significant discrepancies between sets of data.
