Establishing a solid framework for planning and implementing change is a wise move, as it provides a foundation for the extensive coordination that will be needed to successfully facilitate the change.

For this Assignment, you propose a change at the department or unit level and develop a plan for guiding the change effort.

To prepare:

Review Chapter 8 in the course text. Focus on Kurt Lewin’s change theory, and contrast it with other classic change models and strategies.

Reflect on problems, inefficiencies, and critical issues within a specific department, unit, or area in your organization or one with which you are familiar. Select one issue as a focal point for this assignment, and consider a change that could be made to address the issue.

Think about how the change would align with the organization’s mission, vision, and values as well as relevant professional standards.

Using one of the change models or strategies discussed in Chapter 8, begin formulating a plan for implementing the change within the department/unit. Outline the steps that you and/or others should follow to facilitate the change effort. Align these steps to the change model or strategy you selected.

Seeing parents in this department is quite common. Working in this department reveals the difficult element or side of being a parent. Here, one sees stressed, overwhelmed, hopeful, faith-filled, faithless, and dejected parents. All the above is understandable until, in their caring and hoping for the best, the parents become a problem or an impediment to the treatment of their children. First of all, it is crucial to note that as a parent, one would be stressed if their child is sick. In every hospital, the people who are expected to deal with parents or guardians are the nurses. A pediatric nurse, for example, is the one who will be forced to deal with a parent who is worried, stressed, anxious, and ready to do anything to see their child get well. As a nurse, one can unknowingly add to the parent’s stress by the way they talk, approach the situation, or appear to be taking care of the sick child. There are nurses who are overwhelmed by parents whose stress and worry leads them to deny treatment to their children (this could be for different reasons: maybe the treatment involves inflicting pain on the child). It is thus crucial for nurses to know or have some training on how they need to deal with these parents. It is possible, with some training, to help the parents calm down and let the nurses and doctors do their job to enhance the health outcomes of children. Parents being impediments to treatment may not be considered in some quarters as a textbook problem. However, they can and the eventual effect would be death or that the condition of the child can worsen. The lack of training on the part of nurses is a major problem and needs to be changed. Description of the Change Suggestion The change suggestion involves offering training exercises to nurses on how they ought to engage with parents in the pediatric department. Understanding the stress and mindset of these parents is crucial to making sure that they are not an impediment to the treatment being offered to their children. Sanjari et al.
