Introduction
In a learning setting, end-of-life discussions are important to the learners, including nursing students, patients/caregivers, and nursing staff, in ensuring that they develop care competencies for the best patient outcomes. Each group of learners has unique characteristics and experiences; therefore, their learning needs are different. This uniqueness necessitates tailored teaching strategies and learning environments. Setting specific objectives for each group and selecting the appropriate teaching strategy and learning environment will ensure that the end-of-life competencies are achieved.
Learner Groups and Their Characteristics
The ability of learners to acquire classroom knowledge is dependent on their characteristics. Nursing students, nursing staff, and patient/caregiver learners have distinct characteristics, as do their ability to adapt theoretical knowledge to various clinical contexts (Carless-Kane & Nowell, 2023). The nursing students’ group is characterized by their willingness to learn, being goal-oriented, and lacking confidence in handling some clinical topics. The lack of confidence in some areas is due to limited experience. On the other hand, the nursing staff learner group is characterized by the ability to collaborate with others and the need to improve patient welfare, but they have time constraints due to workload. With the patient/caregiver learners, patience, attentiveness, support, honesty, and compassion characterize this group.
