Method
A literature search was conducted using Annals of internal medicine, Clinical Nursing Studies, and Frontiers in public health. The keywords were bed alarms, falls, elderly patients, and prevention. Inclusion criteria were full-text, peer-reviewed articles, English, published 2012-2019, and prevention of falls in elderly patients. Exclusion criteria were animal studies, duplicate studies, and studies not focused on the topic. Four articles were reviewed; one systematic review, two non-experimental cohort study, and one randomized controlled trial (Mileski, M, Brooks, M., Topinka, J. B, Hamilton, G., Land, C, Mitchell, T, & McClay, R. 2019; Subermaniam, K, Welfred, R., Subramanian, P, Chinna, K, Ibrahim, F, Mohktar, M. S, & Tan, M. P. 2017; Ward-Smith, P., Barrett, L., Rayson, K., & Govro, K, 2014; Shorr, R. I., Chandler, A. M., Mion, L. C., Waters, T. M., Liu, M., Daniels, M. J., ... & Miller, S. T. 2012)
Annotated bibliography
1. Mileski, M., Brooks, M., Topinka, J. B., Hamilton, G., Land, C., Mitchell, T., ... & McClay, R. (2019, March). Alarming and/or alerting device effectiveness in reducing falls in long-term care (LTC) facilities? A systematic review. In Healthcare (Vol. 7, No. 1, p. 51). Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute.
Mileski, M., Brooks, M., Topinka, J. B., Hamilton, G., Land, C., Mitchell, T. & McClay, R. (2019) conducted a quality improvement research that involved 561 elderly patients. The purpose of the study was to review alarming and alerting devices and their potential effectiveness in reducing falls in LTC facilities. The study was qualitative and involved the systematic review of peer-reviewed articles found in indexed databases. The inclusion criteria of the peer-reviewed articles was based on English language, whether they appeared in medical journals or published by universities and colleges. Additionally, articles were only incorporated into the study if it was deemed germane by all authors.
The study applied the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) guidelines to ensure that results were consistent. The researchers reported that alarms and alerting devices reduce falls although 5 out of 61 (8.2%) facilitators stated that alarm systems are expensive to install. In 6 out of 57 (10.5%) occurrences, elderly patients who fear falling indicated that the use of alarms provides peace of mind. However, 37.70% of the facilitators indicated that alarms are worthless if they are used as stand-alone interventions while 3.5% stated that the effectiveness of the alarms depends on proper installation. The major limitation of the study is that the researchers did not access the actual data that was used in the 561 articles.
2. Subermaniam, K., Welfred, R., Subramanian, P., Chinna, K., Ibrahim, F., Mohktar, M. S., & Tan, M. P. (2017). The effectiveness of a wireless modular bed absence sensor device for fall prevention among older inpatients. Frontiers in public health, 4, 292.
Subermaniam, K., Welfred, R., Subramanian, P., Chinna, K., Ibrahim, F., Mohktar, M. S., & Tan, M. P. (2017) conducted a quality improvement project in an acute geriatric ward at a large teaching hospital in the Middle East. The purpose of the project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a modular bed absence sensor device (M-BAS) in detecting bed exits among older inpatients in a middle-income nation in the Middle East. The project used 47 patients that were 65 years and above as the sample size and 30 nurses were thoroughly trained to record data. The research was a quasi-experiment, uncontrolled, and descriptive.
The M-BAS device was attached to the beds of the 47 patients and the number of true and false alarms recorded by nurses. Participants’ demographic data were expressed as frequencies and percentages for categorical variables while the Mann–Whitney U test was used to compare the number of true and false alarms pe...
