Mid-Range Theory Assignment Application to Practice

Focus: The focus of this assignment is to describe a mid-range nursing theory and apply it to nursing practice. Consider the applicability of the theory to advanced nursing.

Activity: Compose a scholarly paper addressing the criteria below. Support your analysis with scholarly references in addition to textbooks.

• Introduction:

◦ Identify the mid-range nursing theorist you have selected. Explain your rationale for selecting the theorist

◦ Brief biography of theorist: education, achievements, influences

• Summary of the theory Include:

◦ Scope: Describe the central thesis of the theory.

◦ Context: Describe the metaparadigm concepts addressed by the theory.

◦ Content: Describe the unique concepts of the theory.

• Application of theory to nursing. This section may be based on an actual or potential application of theory to a clinical, administrative, or educational situation.

• Applicability

• Description of the setting in which the theory will be applied (practice, education, administration, research).

• How do the concepts of the theory relate to the actual nursing situation you have selected?  Explain and give examples.

• Feasibility

• How easily could you use this theory in your current practice and in practice as an APN? Is the theory too complex or too simple? What problems do you anticipate? Explain and give examples.

• What do you believe this theory can contribute to health care and nursing practice/administration? Explain and give examples.

Abstract
Nursing theories have been explored and created by several theorist, but with the Health as Expanding Consciousness created by Dr. Margaret Newman enriches the nursing practice, values and principles. The metaparadigm concepts of nursing are applied to the finding of Newman that are applied to the today’s clinical nursing profession to improve on the nurse-patient relationship. The applicability of the theory gives the nurses the skills, knowledge, and art of caring for their patients. The theory is feasible in the nursing practice and has greatly contributed to the current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) practice and improved the nurse-patient relationships.
Key words: Margaret Newman, Nursing, consciousness, health, theory.
Margaret Newman’s Health as Expanding Consciousness Theory
Introduction
Concepts are developed and contain information and knowledge that help to solve some of the world’s complicated problems. There are a variety of mid-range nursing theorists that exist in the nursing profession. Still, Margret Newman's theory pays more attention to nursing as a professional rather than a disease. Why I think Margret’s Newman’s theory (HEC) is among the best because it explains the unitary pattern of the human body and disease patterns. It deliberates the awareness, growth, and opportunities that come with the illness, and she shifted her focus from healthcare to battle the nemesis called illness to how nurses examine patients, and find solutions to their difficult situation (Macharial, Jelagat, & Juma, 2015).
In her twenties, after graduating from Baylor University with a degree in Economics and English, she returned to take care of her sick mother, who was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis that weakened her muscle movement. Newman went to study in Memphis, while working as a clinical instructor. It is from the University that she met Martha Rodgers-Science of Unitary Human Beings theorists as they taught alongside each other at New York University (Smith & Parker, 2015). Newman saw her theory to transform the nursing profession perspective into providing adequate care to the patients by helping them figure out themselves as people in their time of weakness. The essay focuses on the HEC theory with a summary of the concepts, its application to clinical situations, applicability in the real world, and feasibility in the nursing profession.
Summary
The central thesis of the method is on the Unitary, Transformation, and Consciousness centered on articulating the essence of the nursing practice. The HEC theory is based on how human beings have continual interaction with their environments. It considers illness as a chance for both the patient and nurse to grow and be aware of their self-worth and environments. Newman preferred to express the importance of working as a professional as compared to wanted to having head knowledge about leading a healthy life (Macharial, Jelagat, & Juma, 2015).
According to Newman's HEC theory, she describes a person as consciousness. She claims that people have expanding consciousness, whereby she did not limit it to thought and expanded it to include the nervous system and the immune system. The modes of consciousness interact with the environment. The paradigm of the environment is described as a place where a person communicates and connects to (Smith & Parker, 2015). Health metaparadigm as the pattern, which is the evolution and transformation through interaction between the patient and the environment. Disease or non-disease (Endo, 2016). As Smith and Parker (2015) highlight, Newman’s theory emphasizes a nurse-patient relationship and described that nurses should connect and relate with the patient rather than treating them as a job. The primary and unique concepts relate to central nurses treating their profession as a way of caring, counseling, and guiding a patient in his or her complexities and embrace their environment. Hence, Newman's concepts show the connection between the environment and the state a person is in, whether ill or not ill.
Application to Clinical Situations
The Concept of leading a healthy life nowadays goes beyond the parameters of the hospitals to palliative care. Certainly, this can be approached by identifying with the patient to build a relationship that go beyond an artificial linear time to interpersonal relationships to "instantaneous flow of information"(Smith & Parker, 2015, p.277). She says that if the nurses detach themselves from the western sense of time, they can ultimately be present in the patient's life rather than being behind the scene. Nurses can engage patients in dialogues that help them to expand their consciousness and easily relate to their complicated situation and their surroundings (Smith & Parker, 2015). The concept practically tells medical personnel to go push further and care through guidance and counseling, especially to cancer patients, since there are going through a hard time and need someone to help them adjust to the situation. Thus, nurses need to practice their job and create a bond that is more than professional for the patients to have a persistent pattern of interaction with their awareness of the sickness and environment.
Applicability of Margaret Newman's Theory in Nursing Practice
Operative nursing practice requires a formulation and use of nursing skills, knowledge, and the art of care for patients. Certainly, the provision of such listed practices can better be achieved through conducting clinical research. According to Saleh (2018), these findings become the implemented theory that guides for efficient nursing practice. He adds that science is majorly based on the inquiry (research) and the reaction to the findings (theory). For that reason, the research can only be conducted through the interaction between nurses and the patients concerning patients’ conditions. Notably, this will help nurses come up with positive strategies that aid patients better than during mere administering treatment to patients. In this case, Margaret argues that the application of this theory initially requires mutual inquiry of data from the patient or family. Here, the patient discloses...
