IDS 402 Milestone Two Guidelines and Rubric Analyzing an Issue or Event in Wellness Through the Lenses of History and the Humanities Overview: For the first part of your final project, the critical analysis portfolio, you will select an issue or event in wellness and critically analyze it through the four general education lenses: history, humanities, natural and applied sciences, and social sciences. By viewing the issue/event through these lenses, you will gain insight into how the interconnected nature of wellness affects society, as well as both your own individual framework of perception and the choices, attitudes, and behaviors of others in the world around you. For this second milestone, due in Module Four, you will analyze your issue/event from Milestone One through the history and humanities lenses. This will provide you with a chance to practice analyzing your issue/event through these lenses and receive feedback on this practice attempt. Prompt: First, review the overviews and resources in Modules One through Three, as well as the IDS Four General Education Lenses document in the Reading and Resources section of Module One. Next, analyze your issue/event through the lens of history, and address the following:  How does this issue/event interact with the history lens and impact social issues?  In what ways does the history lens help articulate a deeper understanding of the social issue(s) that inform your issue/event? Next, analyze your issue/event through the lens of the humanities by exploring the following questions:  How is this issue/event portrayed creatively in society? What is the message or commentary of this representation?  How does this representation interact with you in your personal and professional lives? Note: You are completing two separate analyses: one from history and one from the humanities. You must submit two papers in a single Word document. Obesity poses a public health concern. Every year, obesity contributes to an approximate of about 100,000 unnecessary deaths (Boero, 2013). Overweight adults are at high risk for many difficult death situations, including hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, and its difficulties, coronary heart disease, stroke as well as cancers including breast, colon, and prostate (Sim, et.al 2013). Teenagers who are overweight are more likely to severe from high blood pressure and unhealthy levels of body fats and other fatty acids. Besides, obese teens often become overweight adults; some researchers have found that even 3-to 4 years old with high BMI are likely to become overweight adults (Kim, et. al 2007). Despite suffering from physical disorders, obese adults and teenagers also experience social discrimination and psychological difficulties.
The incidence of obesity transformed relatively little during the 1950s and 1970s but augmented abruptly over the ensuing decades from 15% in 1980 to 40% in 2009 among adults and from 6% to 18% among teenagers during the same period (Skinner & Skelton, 2014). ‘‘The incidence of severe obesity also increased during 1970-1980 and 2006-2008, and about 7% of United States adults currently have a BMI of 45 kg/m2 or more’’ (Skinner & Skelton, 2014, Pg 562). In the last decades, many countries have experienced extraordinary changes concerning their overweight rates; and such changes have been present in most developing countries. For example, the CDC launched a report on various nations overweight rates. Following the report some nations with notable increases in obesity rates are Egypt (40% obesity rate), South Africa (31% obesity rate), Mexico (22% obesity rate), and Turkey (20% obesity rate) (CDC, June 2018).
Obesity problems and the severity of the related health concerns differ among the society. Individuals with mental illness are at high risk in getting obesity. Research indicates that 80% of individuals with severe disease in the society are obese (Sim, et.al 2013). This puts individuals with mental illness at double risk. The individual have challenges in fighting with a mental illness that leads to social isolation, inactive lifestyle, and other risk factors for obesity, but they are susceptible to chronic disorders linked with being obese. Individuals with a severe mental disorder have shortened life-spans, averaging living being 50 years of age (Sim, et.al 2013). As they die due to chronic health disorders, including obesity.
