Nursing is a demanding and stressful profession that requires proper legislation to prevent workplace problems and guide nurses in promoting patients' well-being. One of the primary problems associated with nursing is inadequate staffing which leads to burnout. The 2023 legislative session establishes various legislative priorities that address these challenges. One of these priorities is the safe staffing legislation, a bill that calls for a healthy working environment in the healthcare sector to overcome the nursing shortage and burnout. The critical elements in this bill include safe staffing standards; improved functions of the staffing committee; and implementation of meals, rest breaks and mandatory overtime for healthcare professionals. (Washington State Nurses Association, 2023). It allows the Washington State Legislatures to intervene to improve the satisfaction of both patients and workers.
