Develop and submit a personal leadership philosophy that reflects what you think are characteristics of a good leader. Use the scholarly resources on leadership you selected to support your philosophy statement. Your personal leadership philosophy should include the following:
• A description of your core values.
• A personal mission and vision statement.
• An analysis of your CliftonStrengths Assessment summarizing the results of your profile
• A description of two key behaviors that you wish to strengthen.
• A development plan that explains how you plan to improve upon the two key behaviors you selected and an explanation of how you plan to achieve your personal vision. Be specific and provide examples.

Most students think they know what a philosophy, a mission statement, and a visions statement are; but in reality they do not. They are not one and the same and they are not interchangeable. Our next assignment asks you to write each of these. In addition we ask about your values. Students typically identify as values those things they think will make them look good in the eyes of others, or those values they think are virtuous. In reality values are neither good nor bad and are neither virtuous or not virtuous. They just ARE. Values is who we are, our values are operationalized each time we make any decision in life. Those reading this chose to go back to school. This decision was made because of the values you hold. The trick is to determine what you really value and then you will understand yourself and your decisions and goals in life much better. The first part of this next assignment will ask you to identify your values, your philosophy of nursing, and your personal mission and vision statement (2 different statements). Since this can be confusing I have provided the following information to help you figure this out. Be sure to read and understand this, because in the next part of the paper we ask you to look at your vision statement and create a plan to get you there. More to come on that later this week.

Know that core values are YOU- you do not change them, they change you- they are behind every decision you make in life and in your profession. They will determine your vision, because it is what is important to you as a person and as a nurse.
Philosophy
A philosophy of nursing is a statement that outlines a nurse’s values, ethics, and beliefs, as well as their motivation for being part of the profession. It covers a nurse’s perspective regarding their education, practice, and patient care ethics. A philosophy of nursing helps you identify the beliefs and theories that shape the choices you make on the job every day.
Define what nursing means to you. Begin your philosophy of nursing by identifying what nursing means to you. Why did you choose nursing rather than another profession?
Personal philosophy statement- Mine: “I believe nurses change the world around them every day and make a difference, because nursing is whatever nurses are doing, wherever they are doing it”
Florence Nightingale’s philosophy of nurses was “that the environment of the patient should be changed to allow for nature to work on the patient, and she felt this was the role of the nurse”

Nurses who want increased career satisfaction might consider defining the underlying mission upon which their nursing identity is built. Finding meaning in our work is important; our mission and values are crucial to feeling like our “nurseness” means more than just a paycheck.
Mission statement (today)
A mission is an answer to questions such as: Why am I a nurse? What is nursing about for me? Who am I serving and why? What are the underlying values that make me who I am as a nurse? How do I live my values at work? Your mission is about you as a nurse today.
“My mission as a nurse educator and nurse scientist each and every day is to mentor the next generation of nurse leaders, so they are comfortable and competent with creating change that will improve the lives of patients and their families. “
Vision statement (future)
Your nursing vision differs slightly from your mission; the vision is more of an illustration of what you’d like to accomplish through your nursing service. Your vision encompasses your aspirations, your goals and the lofty ideals that demonstrate not only who you are as a nurse, but also where you’re going.
“My vision as a nurse educator and nurse scientist is to have created a body of work through service to my profession that impacts the larger community; and to have inspired those I have mentored to make amazing contributions to society and their profession.”
