The registered nurses (RN) profession constitutes one of the most significant medical workers in the United States (U.S.). These nurses work within various contexts, including hospitals, nursing homes, health centers, and learning institutions. They provide different medical services, including preventing medicine, patients’ education, caring for other medical professionals, and coordinating with other medical professionals. In this way, nursing professionals are enthusiastically engaged in conducting healthcare studies and other diverse advocacy, coupled with leadership duties within the medical sector (Thomas et al., 2016). Given the healthcare sector’s dynamic nature, it is increasingly crucial for nurses to be adaptable to the current ever-changing professional environment—this is important to enhance the quality of care that nursing professionals provide within their various areas of conduct. In the U.S., the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) passage triggered a wide range of reforms that affordably defined patient-centered care. Accordingly, nursing shortages, focus on evidence-based practice, and use of information technology constitute some of the reforms that the nursing profession faces in the twenty-first century. This report examines the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee program on the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the nursing profession’s future with a central focus on improving and preparing nurses to offer their services in today’s context.
The IOM Report by IOM research and Robert Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative emphasized four primary facets centered on enhancing the nursing profession. The first delineates that a nurse needs to offer their services to their optimal potential, in training and educational level proportions. Secondly, nurses must emphasize the lifelong improvements within their competencies by registering for additional higher academic qualification training via a learning structure that fosters persistent educational outcomes improvement. The third facet focused on the value of nursing professionals being optimal partners with other clinicians as well as physicians within the medical sector across the U.S. to improve collaborative and partnership care. Finally, the ultimate facet emphasized the necessity to enhance information framework and data collection within the healthcare sector to enhance efficiency, especially within the nurse workforce management and policy formulation in nursing practice (Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, at the Institute of Medicine, 2011).
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative work and the IOM research identified and developed a recommendation to foster the nursing profession. As a result, the IOM Report created eight recommendations to facilitate nursing practice transformation within the areas mentioned earlier, centered on ensuring better and patient-centered care amid the healthcare sector’s dynamism. The first recommendation focused on eliminating barriers that limited nurse’s capacity to optimally utilize and apply their skills and knowledge in care provisions within the healthcare system (Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, at the Institute of Medicine, 2011). This applied to advanced R.N. and required the legislature and congress to make necessary amendments to ensure that nurses practiced their training and total educational threshold.
The second recommendation entailed scaling up nurses’ opportunities to empower them to operate collaboratively with other medical professionals and physicians within the system. To accomplish this, the IOM report endorsed partnership between private and public financiers, nursing education facilities, healthcare institutions, and relevant professional bodies to enhance collaborative programs expansion within the healthcare practice environment. The collaboration would entail physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals within research and other related areas inclined to enhance the practice environment in the healthcare system, including research. The collaborations are tailored to enhance nurses’ opportunities to apply and develop an effective practice to improve the quality of care.
