The Impact of the IHI Triple and Quadruple Aims Framework
Modern and future healthcare needs have created the foreseeable and unforeseeable realization that the medical profession and system would continue to restructure itself in delivering quality and pocket-friendly services. In adherence to these health improvement demands, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) formulated and implemented the Triple Aim framework, which structured its principles to reflect on the work of Janet Corrigan, “Crossing the Quality Chasm.” Corrigan’s six dynamic elements embodied patient-centeredness, safety, fairness, effectiveness, efficiency, and timelessness in promoting quality healthcare services. On the other hand, the Triple Aim focused on creating a sustainable mechanism that would reduce per capita health service costs by improving the population's general health and advancing the patient’s healthcare experience. Further, through the quadruple aim initiatives, the IHI aimed to add another aspect enshrined in finding innovative ways to improve the working experience and environment for all medical practitioners. This paper comprehensively evaluates the impact of IHI triple and quadruple, particularly in reducing wasteful pharmaceutical spending and expensive medications.
IHI Triple Aim Goals
In 2007, John Whittington, Don Berwick, and Tom Nolan formulated and proposed the Triple Aim framework as a proactive and result-oriented mechanism for improving and restructuring individual and population health dynamics. The aim of this elaborate proposal was founded on three categorical elements: improving the health experience of every American by meeting their medical needs and expectations; understanding the health challenges facing the overall United States populace; and reducing the per capita health expenditure either internally or externally (IHI, 2023). By 2008, the IHI adopted these initiatives as a fundamental strategy for restructuring the regressive health policies that did not care for the financial burden faced by the American community. For instance, as an effective healthcare policy proposed by the US National Quality Strategy, the triple aim has since empowered public and private health institutions to improve population health outcomes by reducing disparities and establishing the capacity for nationwide healthcare improvement (IHI, 2023). Therefore, the IHI Triple Aim was initiated to improve population health management by reducing the cost of accessing critical medical care and personalizing the needs of the patients.
Furthermore, the IHI Triple Aim has created an active foundation for managing challenging healthcare challenges nationally and globally since its inception. The first dimension's primary objective was focused on improving the patient experience by creating an inclusive and interactive healthcare system that aligns with the needs and expectations of the victim (Whittington et al., 2015). For instance, in 2010, the US implemented the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in critical states such as Shelby County, Hamilton County, Oregon, Tennessee, and Ohio, which afflicted with devastating infectious diseases and infant mortality. By offering Medicare and Medicaid medical interventions, the government could serve a wider range of populations unsatisfied with the prevailing healthcare policies and practices. However, implementing the IHI Triple Aim initiatives has faced immense issues attributed to socio-economic inequality and uncontrollable health burdens. For example, Hartford is faced with healthcare issues like being among the poorest states in the US and recording high incidences of patients afflicted with chronic illnesses, neonatal mortality, communicable diseases, and obesity (Whittington et al., 2015). Thus, as a macro-integrator, the triple aim healthcare prototype has helped identify, monitor, and address unprecedented health challenges by understanding effective strategies that can help offset high operational costs by providing coordinated and patient-centred care.
Application of IMI Triple Aim in Pharmaceutical Industries
The IMI Triple Aim framework has provided a reliable and result-oriented mechanism for reducing per capita costs for individuals and medical institutions across the globe. Pharmaceutical industries are among the most afflicted sectors regarding pharmaceutical waste and unwarranted expenditure, leading to high operational costs and unprecedented financial burden on the patient (Hazell & Robson, 2015). For instance, the 2010 medical data publi...
