HEALTH AND MEDICINE: EVIDENCED BASE NURSING PRACTICE. Name: Grade Course: Tutor’s Name: (23 August, 2010) Introduction Otitis Media is a disease that is also known as the "Inflammation of the Middle Ear", it’s an infection that affects the area that is between the Tympanic Membrane and the inner ear, once one contracts this disease the patient experiences severe pain that lasts between a period of 2-4 weeks and heels on its own. If the disease is left unattended to the patient will develop complications later on, (Block, 1997) this is because the tympanic membrane is inflamed and has blisters, it eventually raptures allowing pus to flow from the middle ear and drain to the other ear canal. The Otitis Media disease is caused by the infection of the inner parts of the ear were pathogens such as fungus, bacteria or virus get into the ear infecting the inner parts of the ear, and causing the disease. However, the most common pathogen that is believed to cause this disease is the bacteria, known as the Streptococcus pneumoniae, HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otitis_media" \l "cite_note-2" Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis and the one that mostly affects the adults is the HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haemophilus_influenzae" \o "Haemophilus influenzae" Haemophilus influenzae (Block, 1997). Physicians explain that the disease is self treatable, as the patient is able to heal and feel better in a period of time ranging from 1-2 weeks, but in cases were the patient is subjected to antibiotics, The patient develop complications, from a survey that has been previously conducted on the children that were subjected on antibiotic treatment of this disease they developed side effects, complications and cases of reoccurrence of the disease on the patients. Physicians also indicates that there are various methods of dealing with the chronic cases of this disease, this includes surgery that is performed on the patient, this were a tube known as a tympanostomy tube is inserted into the eardrum, Allowing air to pass through the pipe to release the air pressure that is in the middle ear and clear any excess fluid within the middle ear (Kelley, 2007). There are some alternatives of treating Otitis media disease, though these methods haven’t been technically proven. They include application of iodine, Chiropractic manipulation and Osteopathic, Herbal Supplements, Dietary Exclusions, Homeopathy, Traditional China medicine; these alternatives are still being monitored as some trails are still being conducted on them. 724.8.3-01: Sources of Evidence for Nursing Practice. Previous studies that have been conducted indicates that the Otitis media disease, is a type of disease that is commonly caused by the individual uses poorly ear gears or drugs therefore according to this nursing practice it would be better if the nurses conducted a survey that would help them reduce causes of the disease amongst there patients who in most cases are children. This will reduce the cost of treating this disease, and help the country recover / save lots of time being wasted on the frequent visits to the health facilities as the children will regularly miss classes and parents will work in order to take their children to the hospital. According to Kelley in his article “Ear, Nose and Throat” he highlighted that this infection of the ear is caused by a variety of causes including the use of hair sprays and perfumes that get in contact with the dermatitis, (Kelley, 2007)the use of poorly fitted era plugs when swimming of listening to music, or secondary infections of the disease. In McKracen article titled the “Treatment of acute Otitis Media in an era increasing microbial resistance” the article highlighted on the major effects of the use of antibiotics to the treatment of the acute Otitis media in the children as most of these children that were treated using this method developed cases of recurrence attacks of the disease. In Block’s article titled “Causative pathogens, antibiotic resistance and therapeutic considerations in Otitis Media” in this article Block highlighted on the various ways that results to the individual developing recurrent attacks of the Otitis Media, (Block, 1997) therefore he highlighted on some positive ways that has been used to reduce the cases of recurrent attacks this is by selecting the suitable antibiotics for the treatment of the disease. These three articles are some of the noted articles that highlight on this disease known as Otitis Media; these writers have evaluated the cases of this disease highlighting that this diseases caused as a result of infection from pathogens, that infect the middle ear region, the information being portrayed by these writers in there articles are information for the general public this is because the information being portrayed are considered to be highlighting on the issues that causes the disease. Primary sources of information regarding this disease includes the information from the parents of the patients as they attend to in the medical inst...
