Setting and access to potential subjects
The proposed change of implementing effective drive-line infection prevention will take place within a hospital setting targeting patients with advanced heart failure with implanted left ventricular assist device (LVAD). In the recent past, the health care organization has witnessed poor patient outcomes and low quality of life among cardiac patients due to increased cases of drive-line infections. While medical technology has advanced to provide LVADs which significantly improve patient outcomes, infections in drive-lines are common causes of mortality. Health care workers, including surgeons and nurses, will be trained in the new approach to preventing infections.
The amount of time needed to complete this project
The project will take 2 years and 3 months to implement with the first year comprising of assessment activities to determine the characteristics and benefits of the new process or idea. Questionnaires and surveys will be distributed among 50 project members who include surgeons and nurses in the hospital and 200 patients with advanced cardiac failure. Through this approach, it will be practical to learn about the failures in the existing method of infection prevention to improve care. Interview responses from clinical workers and patients will form a basis to assess these limitations as the best evidence-based practice (EBP). The following year will be to implement the project after clinical staff and patients have appreciated the benefits. The remaining 3 months will involve compiling the report that will document the findings.
Resources
The new approach of drive-line prevention among patients with advanced heart failure with LVADs will require the hospital to train surgeons and nurses. Materials that will be required include personal computers (PCs) for presentation purposes, projectors, and handouts, brochures, and newsletters. Some key changes to the current organizational culture include incorporating patients in care. Joensson et al (2019) have argued that patient outcomes tend to improve when health workers, patients, and relatives are involved in designing clinical interventions.
Methods and instruments
A team comprising of a surgeon, 2 nurses, a project manager, and a financial manager will be tasked with the project. The team will oversee all activities during the project to ensure successful implementation. Nurse patient educators and instructors will be among the 50 clinical workers who will ensure that health care workers, patients, and relatives understand the objectives of the new approach of effective drive-line infection prevention. Questionnaires and interviews will be invaluable instruments to gather data about the existing approach (Safdar, Abbo, Knobloch, & Seo, 2016). The obtained data will be analyzed using statistical tools such as STATA, SPSS, or Microsoft Excel to provide an insight into the problem the intervention will solve and potential outcomes after the implementation of the project.
