Evidence-Based Project: Critical Appraisal of Research
Assignment: Evidence-Based Project, Part 3: Critical Appraisal of Research
Realtors rely on detailed property appraisals—conducted using appraisal tools—to assign market values to houses and other properties. These values are then presented to buyers and sellers to set prices and initiate offers.
Research appraisal is not that different. The critical appraisal process utilizes formal appraisal tools to assess the results of research to determine value to the context at hand. Evidence-based practitioners often present these findings to make the case for specific courses of action.
In this Assignment, you will use an appraisal tool to conduct a critical appraisal of published research. You will then present the results of your efforts.
To Prepare:
• Reflect on the four peer-reviewed articles you selected in Module 2 and the four systematic reviews (or other filtered high- level evidence) you selected in Module 3.
• Reflect on the four peer-reviewed articles you selected in Module 2 and analyzed in Module 3.
• Review and download the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template provided in the Resources.
The Assignment (Evidence-Based Project)
Part 3A: Critical Appraisal of Research
Conduct a critical appraisal of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected by completing the Evaluation Table within the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template. Choose a total of four peer- reviewed articles that you selected related to your clinical topic of interest in Module 2 and Module 3.
Note: You can choose any combination of articles from Modules 2 and 3 for your Critical Appraisal. For example, you may choose two unfiltered research articles from Module 2 and two filtered research articles (systematic reviews) from Module 3 or one article from Module 2 and three articles from Module 3. You can choose any combination of articles from the prior Module Assignments as long as both modules and types of studies are represented.
Part 3B: Critical Appraisal of Research
Based on your appraisal, in a 1-2-page critical appraisal, suggest a best practice that emerges from the research you reviewed. Briefly explain the best practice, justifying your proposal with APA citations of the research.

Evidence Level *
(I, II, or III)
Level II: Focuses on a randomized experiment where all group members are subjected to similar diagnoses and treatment. Members from a particular group had all their results recorded separately.
Level I: A critical analysis of individuals only with type 2 diabetes on insulin therapy.
Level V: A critical analysis of qualitative studies of individuals with specific trends (psychological distress, self-efficacy, self-care, and diabetes knowledge.
Level III: Non-experiment systematic reviews and meta-analysis
Conceptual Framework
Describe the theoretical basis for the study (If there is not one mentioned in the article, say that here).**
To investigate the effects of burden-lifetime risk (LR), years of potential life lost (YPLL), and time spent with diabetes to assess the extent of mortality and diabetes incidences.
There is a decreased knowledge of the self-education program for most patients with diabetes. The study aims to observe the impact of support smartphones on insulin therapy for people with diabetes (type 2).
Dependent variables in the statistical analysis conceptual framework were demographics, while independent variables were psychological score outcomes and distress.
Research on bias and quality of systematic reviews and meta-analysis in anesthesiology.
Design/Method
Describe the design and how the study was carried out (In detail, including inclusion/exclusion criteria).
Primary research which obtained data from the National Health Interview Survey
Use of multicenter parallel randomized controlled super-trial
Pre and post-test research methods and baseline post-test assessments were carried out.
Meta-analysis and systematic reviews were conducted. The inclusion and exclusion criteria include patient characteristics, research period, language, and publication status.
Sample/Setting
The number and characteristics of
patients, attrition rate, etc.
Sample size N=653, 811, adults more than 18 years, the setting: Diabetes diagnosis Center
N= 230, Individuals with type 2 diabetes, setting: Insulin therapy clinics and hospitals
N= 122 African Americans and 137 Hispanic, Setting: psychological clinics
Setting: analysis and reviews of the anesthesiology field
Major Variables Studied
List and define dependent and independent variables
YPLL, LR mortality, and incidence of diagnosed diabetes.
A Hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, body mass index, dietary habits, and glycemic and hypoglycemic variability
DSME/S (Diabetes self-management education and support)
PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses)
Measurement
Identify primary statistics used to answer clinical questions (You need to list the actual tests done).
Estimation used Poisson regression and multistate difference equation
Performing a multiple regression model and imputation. The tests were done to understand baseline values of diabetes duration, insulin dose, age, and sex.
Statistical analysis (descriptive statistics for demographics, linear regression analysis for post-test results, and Spearman correlation for scores on psychology and distress outcomes.
RCTs (Randomized controlled trials), meta-analysis, and systematic reviews.
Data Analysis Statistical or
Qualitative findings
(You need to enter the actual numbers determined by the statistical tests or qualitative data).
Statistical analysis: age 20 and above showed an increase in Diabetes cases from 31.7% to 40.7&% from 1999 to 2005.
Qualitative data analysis (8.1% general practices to 8.3% hospital-based outpatients showed Baseline HbA1c.
The data were analyzed using statistical analysis (African Americans had lower scores of phycological issues).
Meta-analyses (no specific data used)
Findings and Recommendations
General findings and recommendations of the research
Burdens of race and ethnicity remain in the U.S. while diabetes cases are reducing. Recommendation: adopt policies that are not racially instigated.
The mobile smartphone app has little clinical relevance to diabetic patients. I recommend personalizing the app to target groups.
DSME/S programs could clinically improve diabetes outcomes for African Americans and Hispanics. Recommendation: Avoiding psychosocial problems would be a measure to curb diabetes.
Proper methodology and evaluation of sources increase the efficiency of clinical intervention outcomes. Recommendation- large scale RCTs are crucial to improve meta-analysis and systematic reviews.
Appraisal and Study Quality
Describe the general worth of this research to practice.
What are the strengths and limitations of study?
