Introduction
Patient compliance on analysis helps to improve quality of life (QoL), as well as mortality and hospitalization (Veerappan, Arvind & Ilayabharthi, 2012).According to Saran et al (2003), skipping or shortening the dialysis sessions is regarded as nonadherence, and hemodialysis is a complex therapy that affects the health outcomes when there is nonadherence. To improve compliance and improve patient behavior towards compliance, then providing feedback of information, involving patients towards effecting change and education are important to the success of interventions (Sehgal, 2002).
Effectiveness of proposed solution
To evaluate the projects progress, then improving patient education to ensure compliance is critical to improving the health outcomes. One of the ways to facilitate patient education is to reassure parents that dialysis is necessary while also being caring and non judgmental (Hercz, 2014). In many cases, patients have difficulty following diet and food restrictions, and intentions need to focus on patient monitoring to improve adherence (Kugler et al., 2004). The education intervention is effective when the participants can improve adherence to diet, fluid restrictions and medication, and hence teaching should focus on encouragement and positive reinforcement to improve knowledge retention (Barnett et al., 2008). Follow-up sessions on the patients would show whether the education intervention was effective, by comparing results before and after the intervention.
Patient perceptions
Patients may skip or shorten sessions on dialysis mainly because of other underlying medical problems, life tasks, and transportation problems may also increase patient non compliance (Gordon, Leon & Sehgal, 2003). Patients who have weak social support or depressive are at a higher risk of non adherence this includes the role of family carers in influencing adherence to fluid and dietary restrictions (Kauric –Klein, 2013) & Cicoli et al., 2011). Taking into account the demographic profile of patients is important. This is because younger and more educated patients tend to comply more with the hemodialysis intervention (Baraz et al., 2009). In any case, lack of motivation affects the way patients view hemodialysis, and motivational interviewing has the potential to improve patient adherence and compliance (Russell et al., 2011).
One of the main challenges to improving patient compliance is that often there are unreported cases of noncompliance (Renalandurology news.com 2012). Hence the education program will focus on providing patient knowledge that will enable the participants understand the risks of non compliance. Education intervention can improve knowledge for clients requiring hemodialysis, especially when patients are able to identify risks associated with noncompliance (Brogmon, 2013). At the same time, lack of knowledge on self-monitoring on diet and fluid intake affects health outcome since self-management is typically complex and patient education is essential (Welch et al., 2013).
Nurse perceptions
The success of the education session is also dependent on nursing perceptions, as attitude influences implementation of changes. Even though, nurses understand the importance of patient compliance, if they are not motivated then they may be less concerned about the projects’ outcome. Hence, there is a need to have open communication as patient- nurse interactions also influence adherence. Nurses need to understand barriers to compliance, as this makes it easier to identify strategies that improve adherence.
Tools necessary to educate project participants
The rationale for educating patients is that this would improve patient outcome, since successful treatment is associated with improved patient adherence (Cicolini et al., 2012). There is also a need to address patient concerns as this encourages patient adherence, while patient assessment helps in identifying the most appropriate interventions.
