Developing an Advocacy Campaign
Introduction
The primacy of consumer education programs is profoundly established to promote awareness about the effects of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients among the Hispanic communities. These programs are designed in a manner that elicits change in the way in which people handle their health, an approach that helps in preventing the causative factors of this illness. It has been established through research studies conducted in the United States of America that the rates of patients suffering from T2D have significantly decreased over the past few years. However, the Hispanic communities have unmet needs in regards to the management of this disease, hence putting them prone to the effects of this illness. In addressing this issue, this study seeks to probe a study aimed at developing an advocacy campaign on the management of T2D among the Hispanic communities in the US.
Population Health Issue and the Population Affected
In the US, the prevalence of adults who are obese or overweight remains higher among the Hispanic communities as compared to the whites. According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the prevalence of this disease is greater among racial and ethnic minority groups such as the Hispanics as compared to other races (Kovarovics & Vinluan, 2012). This is supported by data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collected from 2007 to 2009, suggesting that the prevalence of this type of diabetes is twice as high among the Hispanics as compared to the non-Hispanic communities (Thomas et al., 2016).
In as much as genetics plays a significant role in increasing the prevalence of this disease in this population, environmental and cultural factors are also aggressors that fuel the growth of the disease. On the other hand, this evidence typifies that the Hispanic patient populations are in most instances undertreated, thus indicative of the fact that they are less likely to control their glucose levels, lipid levels, and blood pressures. Given that individuals suffering from T2D are at a higher risk of suffering a cardiovascular attack as opposed to people with normal glucose levels, there is a consensus on the need of developing advocacy campaigns as an effective approach to preventing the development of this disease among the Hispania’s (Thomas et al., 2016). Increasing the healthcare awareness through programs tailored for these individuals would narrow down on the chances of contracting this ailment.
Advocacy Campaigns for the Management of T2D
Community advocacy programs for T2D involves a combination of social and individual action plans directed towards initiating a positive and vibrant policy environment for T2D, thus raising awareness of TD2 and building support to address this issue (Madhab et al., 2011). A basic nomenclature of advocacy is evident in the fact that these efforts should be principally based on evidence. The two advocacy campaigns for the management of T2D include:
