The decision that has negative consequences is the failing to report about the potential risk of slipping. Failing to report triggered accidents which affected the organization`s reputation and probably litigation costs. The consequences of failing to report the spillage issue include the unnecessary application of finances to facilitate further treatment of the patient who slipped and further sustained injuries. The other consequences of failing to report the issues caused deteriorated employee productivity as the cleaning team would be punished for infringing on patient safety. The consequence that is evident in the scenario is job termination and the organization resolve to such a measure as after weighing the effect patient injuries on the organization. There is also a likelihood of termination of people responsible for spillage and also Mike for failing to report the issues. Termination is reached at after the organization incurs losses through costs for training temporary staff, the increment of working hours, and the costs associated with reduced work output, quality, and productivity (Bell, 2011). Patient injuries lower the reputation of the healthcare sector as it lowers the number of customers. Reputation will be lowered as the injured patient will spread bad news about the organization being reckless and fostering unsafe patient environment. Mike’s decision to ignore the spillage issues to the cleaning department has the consequence of promoting accidents in healthcare facilities and in another way promoting unsafe hospitals. According to Bell (2011), failing to report is associated with extra administrative costs used in the process of hiring and rescheduling new workers after terminating the responsible individuals.
The decision to ignore the spill by not reporting for fear of lateness that could amount to accident affected the patients as it triggered the accident. It is expected that healthcare facility is a safe haven for the patient and aspects such as accidents such as those triggered by slippery floor infringes on the patient safety. Falls, trips and slips in hospitals infringe on patient safety. Mike’s decision to ignore the spillage issues to the cleaning department has the consequence of promoting accidents in healthcare facilities and in another way promoting unsafe hospitals. By doing so, Mike will join thousands of health care providers who have contributed towards making hospitals unsafe places for patients as stipulated by the US National Safety Council, where 800, 000 annual patient injuries were recorded to be caused by unsafe slippery floors which trigger unintentional injuries (CDC, 2016).
