* Common Challenges in Managing Diabetics Patients
* Lack of Universal Approach in Treating Diabetic Patients
Although diabetes is a worldwide issue, where it affects children, adults, and the elderly, there is no universal way on how to treat patients that are suffering from the disease (Varaei et al., 2013). Diabetes care differs from country to country or even hospital to hospital where the dominant health care role for diabetic patients varies from nurses or doctors in other hospitals. The lack of a distinct management program creates problems in managing the patients. According to the study of Ginzburg et al. (2017), nurses should take the lead in counseling patients on self-managing diabetes and lead in making support in decision-making for the treatment. Their study found out that nurses are more effective in educating the patients as well as providing evidence-based practice for the treatment that the patient needs (Ginzburg et al., 2017). Therefore, there is a need to emphasize the role of nurses in diabetes care.
* Lack of Proper Storage, Preparation, and Administration of Insulin
Some patients lack the knowledge on how to self-manage their insulin storage, preparation, and dose delivery, which leads to many complications before they arrive at health care facilities. For instance, the patient is disorganized in the storage and preparation of delivery objects, such as vial and syringes or insulin pumps. The specific guidelines for the dosage that the patient needs are important for the nurses to learn the proper guidelines set by the manufacturer. If the manufacturer's recommendations are lost it will raise confusion to caregivers that can negatively impact dose delivery (Rebecca, 2014). So, there is a need for nurses to educate the patients about acquiring the formula, brand, or dose of insulin that the patients use.
* Explaining Knowledge Gaps to patients
* Patient-Centered Education
As stated earlier, there is no universal way on how to treat diabetes patients. Every patient has their unique needs, so the evidence-based guidance that healthcare practitioners should meet the eligibility of the patient. The nurses in advanced role should educate the patients about the risks for complications and other cardiovascular diseases. A need for the patient to understand that they need to use a plan to reduce preventable risks and complications (Strategies for Improving Care, 2016). The comprehensive plan varies, the nurses needs to ask for the lifestyle choices and address unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, drinking alcohol, lack of physical activities, etc. (Strategies for Improving Care, 2016).
* Family, Relatives, and Collogues Education
The nurses should have sufficient knowledge about diabetes as well as confidence when imparting information to the patients, families, relatives, and colleges (Graue et al., 2013). The explanation about self-management, risks, and guidelines should be understood by ordinary people to make sure that they will abide in proper practice. The patients need consistency in knowledge, since the diabetes treatment is a lifelong condition, to prevent unwanted risks in the misattribution of popular belief from evidence-based practice.
* Good Communication among Practitioners
Communication is necessary among healthcare workers in making consistent plans and treatments for patients (Ranjan et al., 2015). Usually, diabetes-specific knowledge is inconsistent with doctors and nurses (Graue et al., 2013). Specifically, Graue et al. (2013) emphasized that health care professionals communicate different diabetes information and treatment plans that are unsupported by evidence. Advanced nurses should take the lead in making consistent information for the education of diabetes patients so the patients can have proper medical decision making for their health (Graue et al., 2013).
* Skills Training Program
One of the most important parts of diabetes care is teaching the patients self-management for their lifelong condition. Healthcare professionals cannot easily explain the self-management to the patient, so a focused educational program for the skills, including coping and addressing challenges related to diabetes self-management is needed (Hillard et al., 2016). Copings skills education is also included because most diabetes patients suffer from social stresses (Grey et al., 2000). The program helps in improving the quality of life of the patients and clear out any misinformation from other social interactions.
* Advocacy for Diabetes Patients
Advocacy is the dedicated action towards the support for a cause on behalf of others (Strategies for Improving Care, 2016). The additional complications for diabetes are linked with social determinants, such as lifestyle and fake news. Efforts are needed to spread awareness about individual health and prevent the onset of diabetes.
