Introduction
Bedside shit report is known to save lives. This tool is simply the changing of shifts between the outgoing and incoming nurses. A successful bedside shifts requires an effective change of patient medical report to prevent adverse events such as patient fall and medical errors. In addition, both families and patient can help to facilitate a smooth transition between nurses by providing information to the new nurse in case it is was not captured in the handbook. Bedside shifts is important as it permits the use openly outlined obligation from one caregiver to another, releases the impending for "near misses" as well as allowing an collaborative exchange from all parties, including both nurses and patients. On the other hand Patient fall in the hospital has been a recurring problem for many years. It has led to so many costs to the hospital, public, the patient and the family members. Efforts have been consolidated to establish means of reducing the high occurrences of patient fall in care units, but sadly there has been no absolute method proposed to end the stalemate. This study proposes a combination of blending the recorded and bedside report and involvement of family members during the bedside reporting in minimizing cases of patient fall.
Appraised Quantitative Study
Anderson, et al. (2009), conducted a quantitative research with the aim of quantifying the quantitative results of a practice change to a blended form of bedside nursing report. The authors review that there has been a tendency by the previous studies to review the benefits of bedside nursing shift report but none has ever quantified the results of this process to establish its statistical significance. The intent of this paper is to offer a critical review of this research.
Background of the Study
Anderson, et al indicated that many hospitals have implemented a combination of the bedside nursing report and the recorded one with the aim of improving both nursing and patient satisfaction, reducing patient falls, reducing medication errors and enhancing patient safety as the end product. However, the outcomes of the implementation of this process have not been determined. This study considered determining the outcomes so as to inform the proper implementation of the process to help in reducing patient fall and enhancing nurses and patient satisfaction with the care. The author established the significance of the study by demonstrating that if the outcomes of the blended records and bedside nursing report were established, the high cases of patient fall reported in hospitals would be minimized by enabling a smooth transition of nurse's shift. The bedside report would indicate the stage of treatment and all the information for a new nurse to take off. Therefore, the purposes of the study as indicated by the authors were to quantify the outcomes of the proper implementation of the blend of recorded and bedside nursing report. The author did not provide a research question but could be inferred as follows; does a blend of recorded and bedside nursing report lead to improvement in patient safety and reduce the patient falls? This research question relates to the purpose of the study as it answers what the research sought to establish.
Methods of the Study
The authors identified the benefits of participation as making the nurses to appreciate the positive impacts of the implementation of the process such as increased satisfaction. They also identified benefits to patients as increasing acknowledgment of the process and enhancing satisfaction. There were no unidentified. The patients were informed, and they only participated after giving consent. Seemingly, the subjects participated voluntarily as they gave out all the information both negative and positive; if they had been coerced, they would retain some information. The institutional review board approval was obtained from the university hospital in which the study was conducted. The study identified an independent variable as the implementation of the recorded and bedside nursing report as independent variable while patient fall, safety, and satisfaction were independent variables. The data of the study was collected through presenting questionnaires to nurses and patients as well as conducting surveys through Likert-type surveys. The author says that the rationale for using this method was because it measures perceptions and is useful in psychological evaluations of people's perspective on a phenomenon or process. Hence, it was good for this study, which sought to collect nurses and patients perspectives of the implementation of recorded and bedside report on nursing shift program. The data collection took a period of one month. The study began with serving the respondents with questionnaires which were later analyzed using ANOVA. ANOVA is statistical software which was adopted by the researchers to ascertain the accuracy of the data analysis. During data analysis, the researchers indicate that the questionnaires were analyzed by groups which later exchanged the analysis to counter possible bias.
Results of the Study
The researchers allude that there are significant statically outcomes form the implementation of the blend or recorded and bedside report. As a result of the implementation of the process, there were significant improvements in the nurse's perception of the report. Patient falls at shift intervals decreased as a result of the bedside report implementation since it minimized medical errors which enhanced patient safety. The findings are valid and accurate since most often when a new nurse comes to take over, he or she may not easily go through the recorded data of the patient which could help in minimizing medication errors and attending to patients whose conditions are critical. Bedside report would provide all the details at a glance. The researchers never indicated the limitations of the study which leaves the readers not knowing the limits of applying the results.
The findings are logically presented drawing from the systematic analysis of the raw data. The authors follow a step-by-step presentation of the findings to elaborately answer the research question. The findings of the study have implications for nursing practice. They can be used to encourage nurses in the patient care section to implement the bedside report for a smooth transition of nurses' shift so as to minimize patient medication errors, falls and enhance the satisfaction of care among the patients. However, the researchers have not proposed areas for further studies to further generate data from the sector for improving patient care.
Ethical Considerations
The study was approved by the university review board before the authors were allowed to conduct the study in the university's hospital. Patient privacy was protected through the anonymity of the results. Nevertheless, the study lacked ethical considerations regarding the treatment.
