In this assignment, you will explore and apply borrowed theory to solve the specific problem that you identified previously, and you will synthesize the applications of the middle-range theory and the borrowed theory into the most appropriate solution to the problem.

Consider the problem that you described in the previous assignments and the instructor feedback about those assignments.
Write a paper (1,750 to 2,000 words) that describes how borrowed theory can be applied to the identified problem. The paper should include the following:

Inadequate staffing levels affect the working environment and patient care, as the hospitals and health centers may be forced to use less qualified staff. The primary role of nurses is to improve patient care and safety. Safe nursing levels improve care since inadequate staffing levels compromise the quality of care. Even though, each patient requires different care, adequate staffing levels support interventions to improve patient outcomes (Zalenski, & Raspa, 2006). The nurses and management are more likely to identify to identify risks to patients and monitor them to take action while addressing patient needs. The Swanson theory is an appropriate middle-range theory applicable in improving patient care (McEwen, & Wills, 2011). As nurses’ focus on understanding the patient experience regardless of whether there is nursing shortage.
Description of a borrowed theory
A borrowed/ shared theory is one that is used in another discipline, but has not been adapted in nursing practice and the world view (McEwen & Wills, 2011). The theories are useful in predicting, explaining, describing or and controlling a phenomenon. Maslow hierarchy of needs is viable in addressing concerns about staffing needs, where nurses show care and concern while improving health outcomes (Zalenski, & Raspa, 2006). People first satisfy their physiological needs including food and shelter they then require to satisfy the safety needs, love and belonging, esteem and self-actualization. The theory assumes that satisfaction progresses while frustration regresses; since people need to satisfy the lower level needs as they move up the hierarchy of needs.
The inadequate staffing levels affect the wok productivity since there is increased work burden and this also compromises patient health. The health practitioners grow more frustrated in the workplace that they have low motivation. The employee working motivation and empowerment are associated with positive working experiences. The nurses ought to feel safe, in an environment that supports their needs. The hierarchy of needs achieves this as the nurses are more likely to have a sense of belonging when their needs are addressed. Inadequate staffing levels cause jobs satisfaction and stress levels, while this has negative implications for clinical practice. It is then necessary for health practitioners to cater for their basic needs and improve the patient care by tackling patient concerns.
Focusing on training, time and staffing needs are important elements to improving staffing requirements, while the theory is linked to the work environment through the motivation aspect. Motivation pushes people to act and get the desired results. When the hospital administration fails to address employee and patient concerns they are faced with the challenge of motivating the workers. The identified theory is assessed based on improvement in health outcomes as represented by quality indicators including improved job satisfaction and fewer patient deaths.
A brief history of the borrowed theory's origins
In addressing the people’s basic needs, Abraham Maslow recognized that needs took precedence over others some needs were preferred over other (Brownlee, 2006). Maslow was inspired by experiments in psychology in 1940’s focusing on motivation, and he applied his observation to different settings (Brownlee, 2006). Physiological needs are the basic wants of a person that need to be fulfilled, and people need to eat, drink as no one can do without these needs whether they are healthy or not. Failure to meet this affects one negatively and the ideas of a hierarchy of ideas can be adapted in nursing delivering quality care. Even among other humanistic theories Maslow’s approach has been highlighted in organization performance as it is related to motivation, and factors that influence workplace productivity.
How the borrowed theory has been previously applied
In a study by Groff Paris, & Terhaar, (2011), the researchers looked into the application of Maslow’s theoretical framework determine whether this model improved the nurses performance and quality. The researchers conducted the pilot study with the aim of identifying how nursing perceptions affect the practice environment in improving patient care (Groff Paris, & Terhaar, 2011). The case of using Maslow’s theoretical framework is that the researchers adopted the tool to support strategy based on the five hierarchical levels. Even though, the study used other tools for analysis, Maslow’s hierarchical guideline was essential to understanding the impact of addressing environmental needs in nursing practice.
Before the implementation of the framework, the researchers and nurses sought to identify the most viable workflow schedule, breaks and overtime expectations. The next face of the hierarchical order focused on using the hospital resources, technology, nurse relationship and nurse ratios. The need for belonging highlighted the case of job embeddedness, communication, cohesion, teamwork, and collaboration (Groff Paris, & Terhaar, 2011). When nurses are motivated they were more likely to work together and this improved patient outcomes, and this was identified as being crucial to addressing staffing needs. The more prepared the nurses the easier it was to implement changes and collaborate to meet the set objectives. The high level of the pyramid corresponding to the need for self-actualization, and self-esteem was associated with empowering the nurses to make decisions, maintain autonomy while controlling practice.
Hospitals may face inadequate staffing levels, and the study highlighted that there are still opportunities for improvement in the delivery of care. However, this was affected by the nurses’ job enjoyment as well as the perceived quality of care (Groff Paris, & Terhaar, 2011).
