Background of the Case
Stress is one of the commonly known psychological disorders humans suffer from. It may be caused by several factors, both physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Some examples are worrying about something, uncertainty, experiencing big changes, being under pressure, having little or no control over the outcome of some situations, not having enough work, activities, or ways to change your life for the better, and so on. Stress as a disorder can affect anyone regardless of age and gender, but how we choose to deal with it is the main issue to focus on. The case report below is in relation to stress that a patient was experiencing before her visit to the doctor.
Winnie is a 24-year-old young woman living in Florida and is a frequent patient at a local hospital. She always goes to her doctor, who conducts regular health checks on blood pressure, urine tests, among others. The only serious condition that she was treated with happened about ten months ago. She was diagnosed with urinary tract infection (UTI), and the doctor specifically assured her to complete the medication doses prescribed to her. In addition, she was advised to stay away from alcohol (since she drinks at least three times a week) until she completes her medication.
Winnie has a 30-year-old boyfriend, and they are both sexually active. Therefore, the couple takes medical measures on pregnancies and STIs before and after unprotected sex since they both have no plans to raise any children any time soon. Upon visiting her physician, as she always does, she explained that she has been experiencing slight painful irritation whenever she goes for a short call. Other symptoms were that she has been feeling low, experiencing headaches, insomnia, tense muscles, and stomach upsets that cause diarrhea. Unfortunately, her physician was not able to determine any reason for these symptoms because she was recently treated for UTI, and she always visits for regular checkups after every three or four months. Therefore, her physician was left with one option of conducting both blood and urine tests to determine the problem causing her to feel like this.
After the tests were conducted, the physician first asked her if she had finished her doses and religiously took the medication. Winnie admitted that she stopped taking the medication after she started to feel better, and she also had three bottles of beer on weekends (Saturday and Sunday). Based on the results, Winnie had not recovered fully from UTI, and on top of that, she was three months pregnant as well, news she did not take lightly. She and her boyfriend are not ready to have a baby because of the challenges that come with parenthood. The physician wrote up a case report that described how and why her UTI condition was never treated, and it was concluded that it was due to the unfinished dose.
Application of Nursing Theory
Given the patient's condition, the most appropriate nursing theory to be applied here is Jean Watson's theory of human caring. It is explained in the theory that humans are not supposed to be treated as items and that it is not possible to detach them from themselves, nature, others, and the bigger workforce (Gönen Şentürk, KÜüÜKGÜüLÜ & Watson, 2017). The theory incorporates the whole nursing sphere, emphasizing the relational progression concerning the care. The theory also expresses the philosophy and transpersonal caring theory in that it is related to how caregivers show care to their patients. It emphasizes on the human-centered features of nursing as they interlace with the technical acquaintance and nursing practice. In this regard, the physician should not just administer the UTI treatment but also advise on the need of the patient to accept her pregnancy.
Since the patient has never had any experiences with pregnancy and childbirth, she is likely to go through stress, which is not healthy for the baby growing in her womb. The stress she is likely to go through will be based on not having control over the outcome. She will begin embracing the physical changes within her body, and she is likely to start worrying about what her boyfriend would say upon finding out. The physician should take her through acceptance and advise her about the possible effects of stressing while pregnant, not forgetting its consequences on the unborn baby and herself. In most cases, pregnant women undergo stress during the early stages of pregnancy. At these stages, most mothers lose their unborn children because of such challenges, among other external forces that might harm the baby. Winnie's physician should ensure that his patient gets professional care throughout the pregnancy stages to avoid this from happening.
Christian Worldviews in Healthcare
It is ethically expected that physicians and health care professionals, in general, base their profession by observing their Christian values. When the care is based on Christian values, it is Christ-centered by nature and requires the caregivers to love and care for their patients as they would do to themselves. Healthcare professionals share in the theology and humanity of Christ as they are portrayed or viewed as Christ to the patient and treat Christ, who is also the patient. Generally, the principles of a Christian worldview offer to support jurisdictive advocacy in healthcare without prejudice by being the supportive base in relation to access to healthcare for families from poor backgrounds and ethnic minorities (Rieg, Newbanks & Sprunger, 2018).
