Understanding the roles of advanced practice in the field of healthcare provision is important for any nursing practitioner. It allows them to have a better understanding and appreciation of the necessary skills and knowledge that he has to develop to reach his goals related to the nursing practice. Accordingly, this article would focus on some of the qualifications, roles, and responsibilities of an advanced nursing practitioner. The initial part of the paper would delve into the process of transitioning from a Registered Nurse (RN) to an Advanced Nursing Practitioner (ANP). Knowing this is crucial to make sure that one’s goal of becoming an ANP is in line with the procedures and requirements of the job. Subsequently, this paper would also discuss the roles of an ANP together with the reason why the author has chosen the Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP) for this specialty. All in all, the author believes that in-depth knowledge about what to expect would be beneficial in achieving his dream career.
Four APN Roles
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRNs) have a variety of roles, tasks, and responsibilities that they have to perform depending on their functions. Nonetheless, the four types of APRNs are the “certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), certified clinical nurse specialist (CNS), certified nurse-midwife (CNM), and the certified nurse practitioner (CNP)” CITATION DDW19 \l 1033 (DDW.Com, 2019). Accordingly, each of these has its roles and functions that make them specialists within their fields.
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)
CRNAs are considered as APRNs who have the necessary skills and capabilities to administer anesthesia to patients. In most cases, CRNAs are employed in diagnostic, surgical, and obstetric procedures. Accordingly, specialists in this field require a master’s degree to get their certification, as well as undertake at least 40 hours of mandatory continuing education to ensure that their certifications are updated. Nevertheless, studies have shown that CRNAs are one of the professionals that would be in demand between the years 2018 to 2028, which suggests the opportunities in this field CITATION Bur18 \l 1033 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2018).
Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)
Another type of APRN specialty that an RN could pursue is the Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). CNS Nurses focus on a specific specialty of healthcare provision, which is usually targeted towards a certain population segment. Because of this, their degree of choice is diverse as they can either choose to work within the clinical setting (i.e., focus on diabetes) or in the public health setting CITATION May17 \l 1033 (Mayo, Ray, Chamblee, Urden, & Moody, 2017). Nonetheless, what makes this field very valuable is its capacity to generate, test, and implement new methods that could improve the delivery of healthcare. Due to their expertise, they can provide comprehensive evidence-based solutions that make them capable of consulting, managing, and doing research, all at the same time CITATION Nat21 \l 1033 (National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, 2021).
Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)
The third type of APRN specialty is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM). Based on the nomenclature itself, th...
