The Roles of APRNs
According to the South Dakota Board of Nursing (2018), Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) licensure delineates the specific role and target population of different professionals, including certified nurse practitioner (CNP), clinical nurse specialist (CNS), certified registered nurse anesthetic (CRNA), and certified nurse midwife (CNM). All these professionals play a significant role in delivering healthcare services to Americans. APRNs usually are primary care professionals and lead the role of offering preventative care services to Americans. They diagnose and treat diseases, guide patients and their families on health issues, treat chronic illnesses, and are expected to continue their education to stay up to date with the current developments in the healthcare sector. CNPs offer acute, specialty, and primary care services across the population's lifespan via examination, diagnosis, and management of injuries and illnesses. CNMs offer primary, reproductive, and gynecological health care. CNS diagnoses, treats and manages patients' conditions, help implement changes in healthcare organizations, and facilitates applying evidence-based care and best practices to achieve optimal patient care and positive outcomes. CRNAs offer a wide range of pain management and anesthesia services (American Nurses Association, n.d.).
In addition, APRNs are expected to collaborate with physicians to ensure the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective, and safe medical care to clients. This implies that they play a central role in inter-professional collaboration and team monitoring to ensure seamless patient care and health services delivery. APRNs engage in inter-professional collaboration and teamwork roles to guarantee the public has access to care regardless of their diversity and background. As registered nurses with specialized training and advanced education, APRNs deliver high-quality, patient-centered care to patients (Boehning & Punsalan, 2023). Furthermore, APRNs are always prepared to adapt to regulatory or practice changes, thus pushing the boundaries to ensure patients, families, organizations, systems, and humanity benefit from their services.
