Introduction
Substance abuse is definable as the pattern of destructive use of any substance in order to alter the mood. The abuse of substance among the elderly has become one of the fastest growing problems of health facing the world, and particularly in America. Abuse of substances like alcohol as well as prescribed drugs among adults around fifty years and above is becoming a problem likely to get out of hand. Despite of the fact that the number of this kind of disorder among the elderly is rising daily, very little has or is being done to cope with the situation. This situation has remained under identified, underestimated, under diagnosed, as well as under treated. The problem of the abuse of prescribed drugs among the elders was rarely discussed until recently and yet a rate of seventeen percent of older adults has been affected. The adults are the most affected by substance abuse because of the frailty among other healthy issues and thus they may grow weaker at every time they take the alcohol, prescribed drugs or other illicit substances.
Statement of the problem
America has reported a rapid increase of elderly people abusing substance and the number of admissions has increased as well. The treatment for the affected persons is urgently required while the non-affected ought to be educated regarding the dangers of the same before engaging in the same. Much attention and concentration is required in order to reduce these cases since it has been ignored for so long. There has been limited research data, insufficient knowledge, as well as hurried visits to the office, and thus the providers of health care frequently fail to notice substance misuse and abuse among the elders. Diagnosis of this problem has often proved difficult because the symptoms of abuse of substance in the older people sometimes tend to mimic the symptoms of other behavioral and medical disorders, which are common among the population. These disorders may include dementia, depression, and diabetes among others. One of the most affected countries is America, being estimated that the number of prescription drug abusers in older people might reach two point seven million by the year two thousand and twenty if the problem will not have been addressed.
Study purpose and rationale
The study was conducted in order to bring forth a lasting solution to the endangered elders who have never been given serious medical attention or sessions of counseling that would help them avoid substance abuse. In addition, it is meant to bring to the health care department to a situation their research for drugs and treatment of this disorder among the elders would be easy. This would happen after they have full knowledge of the symptoms and causes of substance abuse. The study is meant to reduce the number of substance abuse cases among these elders and avoid the predicted number of around two point seven million affected elders by the year two thousand and twenty.
Study significance
The research is helpful in hindering the continued and increased cases of substance abuse in elders, thus preventing the expected number of potential prescription abusers of drugs of two point seven million by two thousand and twenty. The fact of increase of drug abuse every year should be all the individuals’ concern and especially where elders are being affected, making it vital to educate them together with the members of their family regarding the risk factors, preventive measures, as well as ways of seeking assistance.
Target audience
The population of the target consisted of both males and females from the age of fifty year and above together with the members of their family. The presentation was targeted to a particular group of elderly individuals that serve at a certain local community church as well as their families. The illicit use of drugs is more widespread among the older adults of America than the other parts of the world. The older people contain the potential for substance abuse because of their easy access to prescription drugs (Kuerbis & Sacco, 2013).
Goals
The outcome intended is decreasing the abuse of substance in order to guard the safety, health, as well as value of life to all the people, and particularly the elderly. To make the families aware of the need of taking caution to improve the safety of the people they love and decrease the potential cases of drug overdose. In addition, the elderly environment is intended to change through their decision and strive to quit the consumption of drugs whose addiction is a difficult struggle particularly for them because they depend on these medications in helping them with chronic pain. The number of admissions ought to be increased for the treatment of substance abuse for injection use of drug. The proportion of the individuals requiring illicit drug treatment had increased and obtained specialty treatment for dependence or abuse in the past year (Kuerbis & Sacco, 2013). Moreover, there exist some intentions of having a society that has reduced deaths based on drug induction.
Objectives
The members of the group will be capable of verbalizing for the minimum of three medical manifestations, which are a demonstration of drug abuse.
The group members will be capable of expressing the main compl...
