Many times I have heard the phrase “do not take alcohol while pregnant because it can be risky to the unborn child.” The article “Alcohol consumption among first-time mothers and the risk of preterm birth: a cohort study” presents a research study whose aim is to analyze the association between alcohol consumption before and during pregnancy and the risk of preterm birth among 46,252 primiparous mothers (Dale, Bakketeig & Magnus, 2015).
The findings of the investigation revealed that there was no preterm risk reduction for the overall taking of alcohol during pregnancy; the aOR of 1.03 (95% CI, 0.90-1.19) (Dale, Bakketeig & Magnus, 2015). Among the 46,252 primiparous mothers studied, 91 percent of them had consumed alcohol before pregnancy, and less than 20 percent of the sample population took alcohol during pregnancy.
