Factors that Contribute to a Successful Transition Environment
Transition plans are official documents designed to provide a roadmap to students with learning disabilities and behavioral issues to help them prepare for academic or professional life after high school (The Arc@School, 2021). The transition phase from high school to professional life is crucial, especially for students like Brenda Brooks. Since Brenda Brooks suffers from Learning Disability, her academic record throughout her schooling represents a dismal picture. She has also shown an aggressive attitude during her schooling, and her sexually promiscuous behavior and immature motherhood make her a particular case for consideration. Brenda's above-average physical growth, her troubled family context, and her terrible experience of early sexual molestation further provide a context for developing a highly individualized environment for her.
Accordingly, an ideal and successful transition environment must be a unique mix of different components; for instance, the first and foremost requirement is the development of a transition assessment. This assessment should focus on identifying Brenda's needs, interests, and strengths; however, this assessment should be based on Brenda's response to views and not her academic performance and parents' and teachers' observation (The Arc@School, 2021). Another significant factor of the transition environment is that teachers, peers, and parents appreciate Brenda's plan and disregard her troubled past and high school pregnancy. As Brenda's academic and non-academic profile reflects, Brenda aspires to become a teacher after having a future marriage plan with her boyfriend, Sergio. Therefore, the teacher should make a transition environment that provides Brenda with motivation and resources to pursue her academic career.
A crucial contributor to Brenda's successful transition from high school to a part-time teaching career is the provision of technical assistance to Brenda. This technical assistance entails the provision of extra classes, guidance to under-trained teachers for career planning, and the use of engagement-based teaching methodology. According to the findings of a survey, a vast majority of 12th-grade students (95%) acknowledged the role of trained teachers and extra classes in facilitating their transition from high school to the next academic level (Lombard, 2020). Brenda's social skills are inappropriate, as indicated by her bullying behavior with students and disrespectful responses to teachers early in her academic career. Therefore, the teachers should work on Brenda's social skills and competencies by lowering her aggression level to help her fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher.
Resources Necessary for an Effective Transition Plan
Brenda's case is atypical in various ways; she is a high school student with learning disabilities and Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD); her academic deficiency is evident from her low average Broad Reading Cluster standard score (72). Furthermore, her Broad Math Cluster score was even lower (64); hence, the teachers must provide relevant and suitable resources to improve her academic performance for an easy transition. For instance, the teachers can make Brenda aware of all the available resources which she can use to improve her academic performance (Jlillis, 2021). The teacher must inform Brenda how to use social security benefits to pursue her academic and professional career while looking after her four-year-old child.
In the same way, Brenda should be informed about the available community employment organizations, job assessment services, transport facilities, and residential services to help her resolve her accommodation and financial problems (Special Learning, 2023). Teachers can provide Brenda an essential resource to accomplish her transition successfully is the use adult day support and day habilitation programs to facilitate Brenda's habilitation and social care. Since Brenda's only family support is her aunt, the teachers should provide ample information about the available resources, services, and support facilities to help her aunt to provide Brenda with the support she needs during the transition (Special Learning, 2023).
