There are different laws that have been implemented that are ideal for providing guidelines on how students with disabilities and other special needs may be supported; these include the Education for All Handicapped Children Act and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). These laws outline how individuals with special needs may access public education and the approaches set to ensure that they receive financial assistance, which is needed to find their education and other essential services. This would make it easy for educators to meet the needs of students with disabilities fully. It is crucial to comprehend that students with special needs exhibit different cognitive, physical, behavioral, and emotional needs. It has been determined that leaders with disabilities record poor performances than their counterparts without disabilities (Kang & Martin, 2018). Often, this achievement gap is witnesses as the students’ transition from elementary to higher levels of education. In order to reduce this gap, changes have been implemented to ensure that special-needs teachers are adequately trained and provided with the necessary knowledge and skills required to help learners with disabilities increase their academic achievements particularly in topics that are thought to be difficult such as Mathematics and Science.
The government has undertaken effective measures to make sure that students with disabilities. Educators are trained on how to handle and manage students in special-education classes; this is ideal because the people with special needs require more care than those in general-education classes. Measures have been set in place to ensure that only teachers who are certified in special education are needed to teach students with special needs. However, it is critical to comprehend that the government has also promoted the need for inclusion in the education sector; this is ideally necessary since because it helps special needs learners to interact with students without disabilities. In this case, reforms have been set in the learning environment to promote better content deliver in general classes, co-teaching methodology ensures that special teachers and general educators cooperate when providing knowledge to students in an inclusive class setting.
The changes made on how teachers are trained and the methodologies they use when engaging with learners with special needs have significantly impacted special education. Ideally, proper training for teachers increases the value that educators offer to individuals with disabilities, and this plays a major role in realizing the objectives and goals of special education. This is possible because teachers help in reducing the performance gap between students with disorders and those without disabilities. Additionally, promoting inclusive education has made it possible for schools to serve the needs of diverse students without discrimination (Mader, 2017). Furthermore, co-teaching is fundamental in preparing students with disabilities for future initiatives; leaners with different challenges are provided with an environment where they can interact with other students, and this enables them to acquire social interaction skills which they may require after employment. Through obtaining special needs training, teachers are capacitated on how to tailor teaching to meet the needs of all students. It is therefore clear that changing teacher training and delivery methodologies help in promoting the quality of special education offered to needy students.
