Background Information on Chinese Immigrants in the United States
Chinese immigrants in the United States have continually grown since 1980 to nearly 2.5 million of them in 2018 and were ranked as the third-largest group in the States (Hooper & Batalova, 2015). The Chinese first migrated to the West Coast in the 19th century and got involved in agriculture, mining, and rail construction as employees (Hooper & Batalova, 2015). Due to the increased number of Chinese immigrants in foreign countries, the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed in 1882. The Act barred the Chinese from leaving China and also acquiring a visa to the United States. However, in 1979, the Act was relaxed, and they could immigrate to the USA. Chinese immigrants have better educational backgrounds than the natives, and hence they quickly acquire management positions. The job employments opportunities also allowed them to obtain permanent residence in the country by receiving green cards.
According to the research, the Chinese are the highest population that acquire sponsorship and educational, financial assistance in the USA in tertiary education. Despite their high education qualification, they have low English proficiency that other foreigners or immigrants. Compared to the native-born and other immigrants, most Chinese are covered under private health insurance (Leong & Tang, 2016). Although the Chinese have better health insurance than other immigrants, they have the highest record of colon cancer, hypertension, and mental health issues. In 1879, the United States had high racial discrimination cases where they did not allow immigrants to vote (Hooper & Batalova, 2015). The social aspect of the Chinese has also been affected by their continued racism. Racism is mainly directed at the Chinese and Irish immigrants. The United States' economic circumstances have favored the Chinese immigrants since they are well educated and have handy skills compared to other foreigners and Native Americans. Chinese immigrants can therefore acquire job opportunities easily and quickly, especially managerial positions. However, Native Americans have complained that foreigners and immigrants are causing the economic decline due to high job competition.
Description of Services Needed Facing the Chinese Community in the United States
In 1848, gold in California was discovered at Sutter's hill, and everyone worldwide had the urge to relocate to the place (Hooper & Batalova, 2015). At this time, China was facing war, famine, and a poor economy hence California in the United States was a peaceful and calm place to escape. Though there were racism and harsh treatment, the Chinese worked in the gold mines, and the United States government decided to increase the tax rates, which did not discourage the Chinese miners. As earlier discussed, Chinese immigrants have a problem communicating in English. Therefore, the language barrier is one of the significant challenges they face in the United States since English is the standard and the mother language of the nation (Leong & Tang, 2016). Students who travel to the United States have challenges understanding concepts in class, so they first have to learn the language in their fast year to make learning more effortless in the subsequent years. The language barrier also affects the interactions among the Chinese, Native Americans, and other foreigners.
Loneliness was another major factor that affected immigrants, especially if one did not travel with them. In the case of education and employment, one was not allowed to travel with their family. Loss of social status and identity was also a common challenge to all immigrants. First, most people confirm that the living status and standards in the United States are high, and it can be challenging for newly settled immigrants to cater to their needs (Leong & Tang, 2016). Those in the United States and had respectable and elevated positions in their home countries were highly affected by their social status and identity changes. Racism is also a common challenge affecting immigrants in the United States; even recently, there was a demonstration on the 'Black Lives Matter' demonstration. Racism has affected the immigrants' comfortability and self-development.
Proposal of New Intervention to Address the Needs
Citizenship can be considered to be the primary solution to most of the problems faced by immigrants. Immigrants in the United States for a specified period of like ten years and who have no record of violating the nations' laws should be given citizenship. Those residing in the country for a specified period should also be awarded temporary citizenship; for example, those in the country due to educational and employment fulfillment. Award of citizenship will give the immigrant the feeling of recognition and a sense of belonging in the country. The United States being a nation of mixed races, should have strict rules against racism and discrimination. There should also be regulations that favor non-English speaking race programs or soft wares that should not make them feel discriminated against when taking classes (Hooper & Batalova, 2015). Similarly, to most countries with a national language that is not common, like in Japan, international students should be enrolled to learn the English language before they start their Majors' curriculum.
Unity and compassion should be the main values that should be preached all over the country. Employment should also not be based on race or other specialties despite Americans' complaints, reducing chances and discrimination cases. Cultural differences should also be respected and accepted; for example, most Chinese are Buddhist, and not worshiping God like the rest of the Americans should be accepted.
