Exploring a Discourse Community: Document Analysis

Research Paper Instructions:

Exploring a Discourse Community
This assignment will go through three drafts: (1) draft brought to peer review, (2) first graded draft, (3) second graded draft.
Assignment
Write an essay that describes one or more questions discussed within the professional discourse community you have chosen to research. Use both the primary research done in the interview and secondary research to introduce the discourse community to outsiders. Explain the various positions on one or more central questions debated within the community.
Paper Requirements
In order to receive a passing grade or higher, the paper should:
• Incorporate answers from the interview.
• Cite at least four other secondary sources. These sources should be credible and likely to engage the audience of the paper. Avoid using sources that use too much jargon or professional detail (though save such sources for possible use in Paper 4).
• Be as objective as possible. Describe the different positions on the question(s), but do not advocate for one side.
• Address audiences outside the discourse community. Think of this essay like an article that would appear in a widely read magazine. It should explain to the readers who the discourse community is and one or more of the central questions the community discusses.
Length and Format
• Approximately 1100 words.
• APA citation & style format.
You should plan to write a first draft that you bring to class for peer review by your fellow classmates, a second draft that you submit for a grade, and a final draft that is also submitted for a grade.

Introduction
I conducted my research in a nursing discourse community, which is a discourse community being run by a group of professional nurses who regularly come together to talk about their commonly shared interests which they have in common to one another. Such commonly shared interests are typically common goals, which the nurses aim to achieve in their profession. These common goals are not necessarily written down because nurses already understand such goals. Normally, such shared goals include taking care of patients, performing their roles effectively throughout their time of work, and entirely completing the expected work during their shift. They talk to one another for their tasks to be fully completed and for vital information about clients to be understood by their colleagues and other nurses. However, for any reason a nurse leaves the discourse group, the healthcare facility is required to get a qualified replacement to fill the gap. In this paper, I am going to examine my research on a nursing discourse community.
Researching a Nursing Discourse Community
I applied what I learn from English class to conduct research on nursing discourse community. I developed research questions for carrying out a few interviews. I chose interviewees based on what type of nursing professionals they are, how much time they have been in the nursing field, what kind of experience they have, where they are working in the hospital, and knowing some of them from friends and family members. Through conducting the research, I used several research techniques to learn more about the nursing discourse community. Most readings from English class assisted me a lot. The interviews gave me a lot of information I required to complete the research successfully. I conducted my research in the hospital where I volunteered last summer, and the research helped to learn about the nursing discourse community of the hospital.
Interview
I carried out a few interviews with nurses who have had wide experience in the nursing field including some who recently graduated from nursing school. I asked the nurses all the interview questions I prepared, and I obtained best answers from their responses.
The interview questions include the following in a form of summary of the interview:
Me: What do you talk about with other members of your community?
Reply from interviewee (a nurse): We normally talk about care issues to deliver our daily tasks efficiently.
Me: How do you use what you talk about in your community?
Reply from interviewee (another nurse): we typically use our conversations to write peer-reviewed journal articles as an important way of talking about their care experiences to other care practitioners. We also talk to reach other care practitioners to meet needs of patients effectively and talk to patients to understand issues affecting them.
Document Analysis
After collecting data from the hospital, I analyzed the data, which took time because I had to go through the interview answers and to ensure all answers from the interview questions were correct and right. This community is an expertise and professional; it focuses on helping individuals with health issues to solve their problems (personal information). The community is driven by interaction by members to provide care. The nursing discourse community has its own culture, which drives the activities and interaction of the members. The community expects nurses, who join the group to be helpful, caring, organized, team player, and time managed. The community is driven by goals that guide members. The community’s goals drive members to focus on keeping patients in good h...
