Assignment Objectives: 1. To demonstrate understanding and apply course concepts to a current and relevant example of youth justice in the media. 2. To demonstrate their understanding of socially constructed deviance and use of anti-oppressive intersectional analysis 3. To explore the social impact of criminalizing youth Process • In pairs, students will find a current (within 5 years) and relevant example in the media, that demonstrates the perpetuation of the social construction of deviant youth. • Students will explain how intersectionality is operating • Students will show various media portrayal of the example (media coverage, images, messages and narratives) and state how they may have influenced public perceptions and understanding of the subject matter. • Students must show how the example demonstrates moral panic and deviancy amplification. • Students will reflect on how the media portrayal of the case criminalized the youth involved and explain the social impact for youth. The Social Construction of Deviant Youth: A Case Analysis Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation The Social Construction of Deviant Youth: A Case Analysis Introduction Youth deviance is a social construction that is barely explored considering the influence of the perpetrating factions. Often, societal norms and media narratives construct deviant youths who challenge societal rules as criminal or marginal (Lavantesi, 2023). In this paper, emphasis is put on an instance of the social construction of deviant youth and media portrayal therein which is the case of Greta Thunberg, a well-known climate activist. Utilizing an anti-oppressive intersectional lens, this paper analyzes how media framed the events and how the coverage gave way to public perceptions, heightened moral panic, and was a manifestation of broader society resisting the activism of the youth. Case Summary In 2020, Greta Thunberg’s climate activism got international media attention, especially in her speech at the World Economic Forum and subsequent protests. On the one hand, environmental groups praised Thunberg for her courage in combating climate challenges (Lavantesi, 2023). However, she was also vilified besides being characterized as a deviant and disruptive youth. In the negative portrayals, not much effort was put into outlining her legitimacy as an advocate for change. Intersectionality Thunberg’s experience shows how multiple social locations are played out and come together to produce representations of youth in the media.
