Assignment 1: The Social Construction of Deviant Youth Assignment (15%) Learning outcomes This assignment evaluates the following LO: 1. Explain how deviance is socially constructed utilizing an anti-oppressive intersectional analysis. Purpose Understanding the social construction of deviant youth helps social service workers tailor their interventions to address underlying causes rather than treating symptoms. it allows for more nuanced understanding of how societal norms and structures influence individual behaviors. By recognizing the societal factors at play, as SSWs can provide more culturally sensitive and effective support, advocate for systemic changes, and empower youth to navigate and challenge oppressive structures. Moreover, it allows SSWs to approach their work with greater empathy and understanding towards marginalized groups, fostering stronger therapeutic relationships and ultimately leading to better outcomes for the youth they serve. Assignment Objectives: 1. To demonstrate understanding and apply course concepts to a current and relevant example of youth justice in the media. 2. To demonstrate their understanding of socially constructed deviance and use of anti-oppressive intersectional analysis 3. To explore the social impact of criminalizing youth Process • In pairs, students will find a current (within 5 years) and relevant example in the media, that demonstrates the perpetuation of the social construction of deviant youth. • Students will explain how intersectionality is operating • Students will show various media portrayal of the example (media coverage, images, messages and narratives) and state how they may have influenced public perceptions and understanding of the subject matter. • Students must show how the example demonstrates moral panic and deviancy amplification. • Students will reflect on how the media portrayal of the case criminalized the youth involved and explain the social impact for youth. Student may write a traditional paper or prepare a presentation (PowerPoint, Prezi or Canva) please note that you will not have to actually present it.
