Aim:
To understand the rhetorical features of a professional writing text based on the rhetorical principles you have learned by Week 4. Eg., how are the appeals (logos, pathos, and ethos) working in the chosen text to make it effective? or not effective? What rhetorical branch/es (forensic, deliberative, or epideictic) frame the communication? Who is the target audience, or the secondary audience, and what is the main purpose of the text? Does the text achieve its purpose or could it be improved?
While you may not be asked to conduct a “rhetorical analysis”Links to an external site. in the workplace, specifically, chances are you will be asked to analyse a target market or the needs of a particular client demographic, or simply to “read the room” and figure out what motivates an audience or what strategies might best grab an audience’s attention and sustain their attention; or make a message more memorable; or persuade an audience to perform some action like clicking a link, or buying a product, or subscribing to a service, or preparing a meeting, or getting involved. Learning how to conduct a rhetorical analysis can help you do these things better, and understanding rhetoric gives you the vocabulary to help justify why you think a particular text should be presented or crafted in a particular way, to best serve its purpose.

Process – how to build your Demonstrative Research Paper (DRP)
1.Select a text = a piece of professional writing either online or in print. This text should be from a real professional writing situation that might relate in some way to your future career goals (see the list of possible texts below). The text has to have been published in some way, being publicly locatable, or distributed in some way. The text might just include writing, like a professional email, or combine writing and images, like a press release or product launch.
2.Compose a detailed analysis of the document’s rhetorical features and effectiveness:
·analyse the rhetoric in the “text” and how it operates on the audience
·don’t try to say something about every rhetorical concept; show you understand rhetoric by identifying rhetorical functions that stand out the most, and interesting ways that different parts of rhetoric work together.
·evaluate the effectiveness of the rhetoric, according to its genre conventions
·cite specific information from relevant sources from the unit to demonstrate your understanding of how rhetoric works.
·Remember, be responsive to what you observe about the text, using your own ideas that you can write about critically (don’t just ask AI to do the analysis, this makes for very boring essays that all sound the same and is against academic integrity policies = plagiarism)
3.Take screen shots of the exact information you are citing in your paragraphs

paste them at the bottom of your document to present in sequential order after your References list. Remember, this is a vital component of the Demonstrative Research Paper (DRP), so you need to make these neat and presentable before submission (using highlights or drawing tools to indicate the precise information you are citing). It’s best to collect these as you are writing your paper—it’s much faster than looking for them all later!
4. Write your “AI Acknowledgement Statement” and add it to the top of your Demonstrative Research Paper (we will provide time to draft these in tutorials). Any submission that fails to include this ‘AI statement’ will automatically receive 30% (7.5) and will not receive further feedback. If you have not used any AI (including translation devices, Grammarly, etc.), you must still write this statement. You can write: “I have not used any AI tools when writing this paper”.

Rhetorical Analysis of Patagonia’s Mission Statement
This paper aims to conduct a rhetorical analysis of Patagonia’s mission statement entitled Our Reason for Being. Unlike most of the trendy statements that leverage brevity to remain catchy and memorable, Patagonia goes at considerable length to remain detailed and create an essence of storytelling to connect with the readers (Patagonia Official, 2025). The statement begins with the company’s introduction, trying to hook the readers by highlighting how they started as a humble firm and then gradually grew into a renowned industry player. On the whole, the statement revolves around the company’s commitment and contributions to climate by devoting a portion of its profit to environmental causes and dealing in products for silent sports.
Beginning with ‘rhetorical situation’, it is evident that Patagonia is the author of the statement being analysed, the global audience, particularly sports lovers, is the audience, and the purpose is to present the exigency of climate degradation demanding immediate attention (Peters et al., 2022, p. 30). While considering the effectiveness of its message focusing on the characteristics of its target audience, the appeal to emotion appears well placed since the audience is supposed to be the individuals who are caring and holding nature in high regard, likely to be sensitive and easily moved by emotionally charged devices such as storytelling techniques to set the mood.
Alongside, the text also tactfully combines Aristotle’s three rhetorical branches, including deliberative rhetoric, forensic rhetoric, and epideictic rhetoric by walking the audience through all three perspectives of time (Aristotle, 2020, xxxvii). As for forensic rhetoric, Patagonia boasts of its humble beginning that, to a significant degree, also contributes to the company’s ethos by suggesting the continuity and authenticity of its moral stance (Burton, n.d., p. 2). The authority raises the company’s ability to stick to its commitment to the environment throughout its journey, making it appear more genuinely concerned rather than opportunistic in its approach.
