Individuals think that their lives would improve if they acquire a particular product or service. There is a reason why someone will have a particular product or service, despite other alternatives in the market. Individuals tend to purchase stuff because a message about the product has persuaded them. Businesses are competing to ensure that their products and services reach their clients, despite the stiff competition. It is through marketing that businesses can influence their clients. Despite the importance of marketing today, it is not without opposition. Some people believe that marketing is evil and should not be used. They see it as a necessary evil which society needs to approach carefully. However, marketing is critical to society, and it is not evil in any way.
Misconceptions about marketing have played a critical role in downplaying the meaning of marketing. Firstly, some individuals consider marketing as a waste of resources. Instead of spending a huge amount on marketing efforts, why not spend the same on improving the product? While this may appear legitimate, people need to appreciate that making a product is one part of the process. No matter how a product or service is good, consumers have to know about it (Evers, Cunningham & Hoholm, 2020). Otherwise, clients cannot purchase what they do not know. Because of the importance of marketing, businesses continue spending more money on marketing efforts. Even in the era of social media, firms are strategizing on using social media to reach their clients (Berry, 2019). The idea that great products do not need marketing is misleading. Every innovation must find itself in the market. Otherwise, it will not generate the source any meaningful profits. No matter how a company has a great product, it must ensure that the innovation reaches the marketplace (Evers, Cunningham & Hoholm, 2020).
Opposition to marketing centers on the activity being manipulative and objectifying women. According to Lindstrom (2012), marketing is a tool that companies use to brainwash their clients. The author implies that businesses manipulate customers' minds and persuade them to purchase things they would otherwise not purchase. The author further indicates that doubling the size of the cart causes one to buy up to 40% more. While marketing may cause clients to purchase things they may not necessarily need, individuals, need to appreciate that they have a choice.
