Throughout history, humor has been utilized as a means of communicating vital messages. As a strategy of addressing environmental issues, the use of media platforms to distribute amusing content has become more widespread in recent years. Over the years, many media outlets have facilitated a substantial evolution of humorous expression. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, which frequently depicted hilarious scenes or figures, provide one of the first examples of humorous expression (Kiger, n.d.). Aristophanes was one of the most well-known comic authors of Ancient Greece, where comedy was a prominent form of entertainment.
In the 15th century, the distribution of satirical pamphlets and broadsheets was facilitated by the emergence of the printing press. In the 18th century, satirical prints grew in popularity, with painters such as William Hogarth and James Gillray producing the most iconic works of the period (Rowson, 2015). The development of photography in the 19th century enabled the cartoon to emerge as a new form of humor. Cartoonists such as Charles Addams and Gary Larson gained immense popularity due to their dark and frequently perverted humor. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, with the rise of the internet and social media, humor has taken on a whole new shape. Memes, GIFs, and viral videos are currently among the most popular methods of internet comedy communication.
