Background
Access to the internet and using various digital technology tools is commonly more than ever before. Some use the internet in the workplace, and while the internet is essential in communication, it is also a source of information. Those without internet access will be at a disadvantage in the digital era. One of the issues associated with technology adoption is the loss of jobs due to automation, but there are opportunities to work in different positions. While there has been increased internet use in the workplace, there is also a growing risk of internet addiction and some employees becoming less productive. Thus, some organizations are failing to leverage the power of digital technology (Griffiths, 2003). In the contemporary workplace, there is an emphasis on flexibility, efficiency and accuracy. The internet and technology help achieve some of this.
Precarious' nature of work
The internet is one of the factors that have contributed to higher job insecurity, and the precarious nature of work is partly because there has been automation. The internet is replacing people in different industries. There is a need to adapt to new technologies to leverage these technologies and ensure that employees are best fit to work in organizations and use digital tools (Pupillo Noam & Waverman, 2018). People in precarious jobs lack job security and generally have lower benefits as it is easier to replace them. There are fewer opportunities to improve skills and promote professional development, and people are increasingly working as independent contractors in the gig economy. The future of job demand and demographics changes is other factors that are likely to affect future job prospects. For instance, there is greater pressure on labor productivity when there is an aging population.
The internet is one of the most popular communication mediums in the digital ear, with people moving further away from traditional media. Innis (2008) points out that in the information age, information-processing technologies have had a profound impact on societies shaping opinion, and people have access to diverse sources. The computer, like previous information technologies, structures information similar to the mass media, and the messages are tailored to specific target markets. Many workplaces require information and data from diverse sources, and the internet is one source of information, which also facilitates communication.
In the 20th and 21st centuries, working conditions have changed dramatically where there is now adaptation to processes that are mostly systematized. Technology adoption, including digital technology, has been adopted to increase productivity and wealth, but: technological progress has also eliminated the need for many types of jobs (Attaran, Attaran & Kirkland, 2019). One way to address this threat is to leverage technology towards new opportunities in different sectors and industries. Organizational changes have also influenced the widespread adoption of technology as there is greater demand for data use in analysis and prediction.
Job security
There are different factors that are associated with job insecurity in the digital era, where the job market requires digital skills. The job market is competitive more than ever before, but the labor markets no longer offer workers' protection like in the past. Job security extends to unstable employment, low income, vulnerability in the job market, and reduced access to benefits. The lack of stable working conditions is an issue when there are no training and development possibilities. Automating mundane and labor-intensive tasks has been helpful to eliminate unnecessary tasks but may also threaten job security, in jobs that may never come back because of automation.
Technological skills that formal education does not necessarily provide and employers are not always willing to be involved in digital training as the costs of this increase. Telecommuting, online learning, and digital platforms are more common, and in the future, employers will look for more workers with digital skills (Nam, 2019). The internet is one of the most influential technological developments in the workplaces, as workers can learn transferable skills, and employers can get the services of freelancers at a lower cost than hiring full-time employees. Computers and the internet have been crucial to the transmission and accessibility of information, including religious texts (Said, 1997).
Technology changes the intensity of the various tasks as technology automates manual tasks more quickly than cognitive tasks and routine tasks more than non-routine ones. Thus, technology has transformed the jobs market, and now with the integration of AI (artificial intelligence) machine learning, technology may perform cognitive and non-routine tasks. Technology and interest now affect the traditional low and medium-skilled jobs such as industrial workers but are also now affecting more complex activities requiring structured knowledge and a lot of data.
New technologies and the internet have led to the emergence of new forms of business and there are now various digital platforms to interact with others create on social media platforms and the offer services through applications, the digital world evolves fast, and in the future, it is likely that today’s youth will work in professions that are not yet in existence profession that does not yet exist. It is likely that there will be a large share of the workforce requiring digital skills as one of the core skills (Desai & Lele, 2017). Even as job search portals and websites now make it easier to look for the jobs that workers are best fit, employers are requiring more job skills and competencies.
 Career prospects and economic inequality
Deregulation of labor markets there are flexible working conditions, but there are low wages for those who lack the technology and transferable skills. While automation and internet use has eliminated some jobs, t...
