Rapid technological advancements in communication have transformed the world into a small village where people can get information quickly. Digital technology has been at the forefront of enabling development in the world, and most of the population in contemporary society has access to digital media daily. Children and adolescents have also been granted unlimited access to digital media and the proportion is more considerable in developed countries compared to developing countries. However, the impact of digital media use among these populations has yet to receive the desired attention, given that infancy and adolescence are crucial developmental stages in life. In the context of the adverse effects of digital media on brain development in children and adolescents, the social learning theory provides valuable insights into how exposure to media content and interactions within digital environments can influence behavior and cognitive processes. Excessive technology use has been linked with an increase in cases of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among grown youngsters. This is coupled with poor sleep patterns, which may present in the form of a more prolonged onset of sleep or shorter sleep time. Bourchtein et al. (2019) used a multi-informant technique to study the variations in adolescents with and without ADHD with specific associations with technology use and sleep patterns. They found out that youngsters struggling with ADHD had participated in at least twofold as much daily video games and social media use and had more sleep-wake problems. Teachers in eighth graders also reported frequent cases of daytime drowsiness in youngsters struggling with ADHD and more online use. Physicians and parents should consider using digital technology when addressing sleep problems at home and in clinics.
Secondly, excessive active use of digital media in children and teens causes impaired social and emotional intelligence. Pathological internet use, primarily gaming, is a mental disorder as categorized by the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). A study by Kaess et al. (2021) aimed to establish whether adolescents' excessive internet use should be considered risky behavior or psychopathology.
