Executive Summary
Introduction
It is no doubt that journalism belongs to one of the fastest-growing fields these days. Due to the advent of different forms of technology for publication, techniques in conveying information, as well as the demands for expertise in every topic possible, different careers in journalism has emerged in the past few decades. One example of a major shift in demand for journalists is apparent in the field of data journalism. Before the birth of the internet, data journalism was infrequently used, while traditional types of reporting are the most dominant CITATION Brand \l 1033 (Bradshaw, What is Data Journalism?, n.d.). These days, the availability of information, its sheer volume, as well as other circumstances (i.e., the validity of data and demand) made the field even more indispensable as compared to what it was decades ago. In line with this, these changes would be analyzed in this article. Specifically, the author of this article would focus on two points: (1) How can one establish a career in the field of data journalism? Moreover, (2) How can data journalists benefit policy-making in the state?
On the one hand, knowing the demands of the field these days in important for both students and professionals alike who want to pursue a career in the field. Specifically, however, the main focus for the first question would be on the field of Data Journalism, which is a crucial profession in today’s context.
On the other hand, data journalism’s importance in the crafting of policies would also be analyzed. This question stems from the fact that these days reports generated by through ‘big-data’ have more traction in the bigger society as compared before. The author believes that journalism should not only be concerned with providing data, but also contributing to the bigger society in which they live in.
Purpose of the Research
One of the main purposes of this research is to orient students and professionals these days about how can a professional establish a career out of journalism. This would help them to focus on the important aspects of education while aiming at their goals of becoming a journalist. Nonetheless, a major bulk of this study would be aimed at the importance of data journalism in our society as well as how to have a career in it. All in all, the author believes that an understanding of both of these questions could help in order for students and professionals to have a firm grip of journalism as a growing field.
The scope of the Report
Some of the main issues that are included in this article are the demands for journalists across different mediums of publications, the nature of social media journalism (e.g., fake news), demands for data journalism, and the effects of data-journalism on the greater society (e.g., policy-making). While most of the focus of this article is on data journalism, it also tackles some of the issues of other fields, which then relates to the happenings on the preceding.
Results of the Study
These days, data about the field of journalism shows two opposing opinions. On the one hand, there are those who say that field of journalism (professional journalism) is already dying due to the availability of others to share their opinions with everyone simply. This reduces the authority of professional journalists, which also reduces their reach CITATION Sim17 \l 1033 (Simons, 2017). On the other hand, some studies also say how journalism is facing a new wave. A wave which transforms the needs, roles, and responsibilities of journalists as a member of the greater society. Each of these standpoints would be analyzed in greater detail.
