Introduction
The value of education especially in modern day society cannot be underestimated. It forms the basis of development in a majority of parts in the world. In the past, education was only emphasized at the very basic level. It would be adequate for one to receive entry level education at the high school level. Higher education was not very much emphasized. This has changed with time as more people show interest and commitment to achieve the higher education. There is the value attached to the attainment of higher education. This discussion looks at the core value associated with college and university education. The skills that are gained in university or college education are those that can be used in real life scenarios. The scope of this discussion will hence encompass some of the skills gained from higher education and how these skills are of use especially in enhancing oneÒ€™s career. Further, the paper will explore some of the opportunities that higher education presents to those who got through it.
Skills Gained
Higher education is a means through which the mind of a person is opened up. Education encourages students to develop a level of thinking which beyond the ordinary. Ordinarily, the mind of a person tends to be closed up unless exposed to challenging thoughts (Doyle, 2010). Higher education has a way of pushing students beyond what is basic to ensure that one can engage in critical thinking. When students leave the education system and go to the job market, the expectation is that they can put into useful practice knowledge imparted in class. Higher education plays a crucial role in helping students manage their skills in a manner that is relevant to the job market.
Communication, a core skill in the job market and the life outside school has been largely built by the higher education system. Basic level education including high school places emphasis on learning just to pass exams. While there are skills that are imparted in the course of the first basic levels, these skills are not well cemented. This means that even if the students have learnt some important skills at the basic level, they are likely to forget once they are out of the system. Higher education ensures that the skills gained throughout school are cemented so that they are of use.
Going beyond a structured society to establish businesses is as result of the skills that are impacted through the education system. In America, although the level of unemployment is still high, there is a mind shift from white collar jobs (Felix, 2010). People have accepted that they all do not have to be employed. Instead, people are using the skills imparted on them at the higher education level and starting their own income generating activities.
For those who get into employment, having undertaken higher level education gives one an edge to earn more. Usually promotions and remunerations given are based on merit. Merit encompasses a number of factors including experience and the level of education. Those at an advanced level are advantaged and are getting remunerated better than those with basic level education. Previously, people would get comfortable after completion of undergraduate studies. However, with an influx of people with undergraduate degrees, those seeking an edge in the job market are advancing the level of education even higher (Newfield, 2010). The enrollment for Masters and PhD education has gone up. It is therefore a win situation for those who have higher education. In recent years, there has been a widening gap between the salary bracket of those with high school education and graduates of the higher education system. Further, the experiences in college and university are more reflective of the real life in the world than is the case at the high school level.
Higher education is referred to as such as recognition that it goes the parameters of what is offered at high school. There is a combination of impartation of knowledge and actual skills that are very crucial to the various industries that rely on manpower. In the technological and digital era, most of the jobs require less physical work and more mental input (Newfield, 2010). This is very role of higher level education that ensures students can easily understand the theoretical aspect of issues as well as the practical bit and make use of the same at their fields of work.
Having gone through the higher education system it is possible to fully understand all the issues discussed herein. Fast hand experience is a perfect indication that higher education is by all means the future of the society. There is cost that is involved when investing in higher level education (Newfield, 2010). Besides the money, there is also the aspect of time and having to endure complexity. Higher level of education is by no means simple and requires a ready mind. The hands-on approach is what gives the students an edge so that they are polished by the end of the system. There are arguments that higher education is expensive and as compared to high school education. This is very true and yet even high school graduates can still manage to secure jobs. If this be the case, what then is the point of having to use so much money and spend s a lot of time to go through higher education system? Although the higher education system is expensive, the amount of money that one is paid after completing their studies can easily be recovered within two years. On the other hand, high school education will only secure one a low paying job which may mean one has to juggle between jobs in order to supplement their income.
